Shopper Andrea Cong- don, visiting from Redmond, Washington, with her family, has many food sensitivities and was “very happy” to see a store offering gluten-and dairy-free products. “We’ve been coming to Cannon Beach for years,” she said. “This has all the food we like to eat.” The 10,000-square-foot building — which cost about $4 million, co-owner James Welsh said, has high ceil- ings, ample natural light from windows and interior and exterior wood. Produce, dairy, meat, fro- zen and dry foods, health and beauty products and a large wine and beer selection illed the aisles. The market serves Sleepy Monk coffee at its corner coffee shop. Hot sandwiches and soups are coming soon. The store has about 25 employees. The store’s com- pensation package made inding qualiied workers less dificult than expected, Jon Welsh said, though some turned down the job due to having a dificult time ind- ing housing. Welsh said it was “a relief” to be open and they will keep reining the store and tailoring products. “The chamber did a great job in analyzing the mar- ket,” Welsh said, adding that the owners also applied what they learned from open- ing Manzanita Fresh Foods store years ago. “We’re glad the reception from the city has been overwhelmingly positive.” After the ribbon-cut- ting, the chamber presented the store with a welcome plaque. “Fresh Foods will be a wonderful addition to Can- non Beach,” chamber Exec- utive Director Court Carrier said. “It is amazing to see this come to fruition.” Jeff Ter Har/For The Daily Astorian Winners of the Miss Oregon Scholarship Pageant preliminary competitions Wednesday pose with Miss Oregon Ali Wallace, second from left. It is evident the time has come for retirement, she laughed, “When you get senti- mental about things like that.” According to Superintendent Doug Dougherty, “Through her inspiring leadership and advo- cacy for students, a culture of learning and growth has been established throughout Sande’s career.” “She works with her teach- ers, parents and support staff to make sure students’ needs are met and each student has a safe, caring and effective learning environment,” he added. Broadway Middle School Principal John McAndrews will take over at the Heights, while Broadway Middle School Assistant Principal Robert Rusk will ill in for McAndrews. As for Brown, she looks for- ward to having additional time for kayaking, hiking and ski- ing. However, she also imag- ines both she and her husband, Mike Brown, who also is retir- ing from Seaside High School this year, will want to continue working part-time or investing some hours into education. “I don’t think we’re done contributing to that ield,” she said. Changing course Education was not Brown’s original career choice. She irst received a degree in parks and recreation from Central Wash- ington University, and she planned to settle down in that area. Brown says her original career goals were formed in the 1960s and ’70s when career options for women were lim- ited. In the following era, with its expanding horizon of gender equality, Brown wanted to grasp new, burgeoning possibilities. She spent time as a forest ire- ighter and a Washington State Parks employee, among other jobs. She was uncertain about teaching as a profession because it seemed too “clichéd.” “I didn’t want to be teaching, because that’s what women typ- ically had done,” she said. When her husband took a job at the high school, the couple moved to Seaside and Brown worked at the Sunset Empire Park & Recreation District for a few years. While there, she soon discovered she enjoyed teaching classes. She started taking courses at Clatsop Community College, inishing her teaching degree through Paciic University with a student teaching segment at Banks High School. Brown started her new career as an English and journal- ism teacher at the high school in 1990. Having served as the Cannon Beach principal and knowing many of the stu- dents and their families, Brown felt poised to lead the schools’ merger. “I wanted to be here to help bring everybody together,” she said. Beneits and challenges Brown can point to sev- eral features she values about the Seaside School District: the location, the students, the hugely supportive community, her fel- low educators and the good bal- ance between veteran staff and administrators and new faces who offer fresh ideas. “I think that has beneited our district greatly,” she said. Brown administers the larg- est staff in the Seaside School District. Over the past two years, Dougherty said, she has “successfully brought together employees from three schools LISTINGS THE DAILY ASTORIAN A lish and coach the high school’s swim team. In 2002, Brown was hired as the assistant principal at Broad- way Middle School. The fol- lowing year, she maintained a portion of that role while also serving as principal of Gearhart Elementary School. Brown was the principal of both Gearhart Elementary and the Cannon Beach Elementary School in 2005, before serving solely as the Gearhart principal starting in 2007. She inished making her rounds of the Seaside schools when she became the princi- pal at the Heights in 2014. In fact, she said, her one “claim to fame” is having worked at every school in the district. As to which teaching gig was her favorite, Brown said, “I’ve enjoyed them all, and I think that’s the sign of a true educator” — the ability to be comfortable and content teach- ing any age group. In 2014, former Cannon to create a cohesive instructional team and strong school identity.” Educators are becoming increasingly responsible for ensuring students have access to food, clothing and mental and physical health care — all the things that ultimately would affect their learning and well-be- ing. Brown said she believes “it’s deinitely gotten to be more stressful for educators.” She appreciates the support she receives from community members and organizations who run programs that provide chil- dren with supplemental clothes and food. She also consistently inds way to collaborate and encourage parents to play active roles in their children’s educa- tion, Dougherty said. From Brown’s perspective, her interactions with fellow edu- cators, students and their fami- lies are rewarding for herself, as well. “I learn every day from my kids and their parents and my staff,” she said.
