SPORTS THE DAILY ASTORIAN • WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29, 2016 7A Poyer camp going strong in third year Knight stuffs the Gulls, 7-0 By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian The Daily Astorian Shortly before he embarks on year No. 4 of his NFL career, Jor- dan Poyer took some time out of his schedule to help stage year No. 3 of his annual football camp, held Saturday at CMH Field. The hot, sunny day had a train- ing camp feel for some 75 young football campers, who learned the basics of the game from the Astoria coaching staff, current and former Fishermen, and of course their hero, Poyer. The Class of 2009 graduate of Astoria High School began the Jordan Poyer Football Camp in the summer of 2014, shortly before his second season with the Cleveland Browns. Now in its third year, Poyer said the camp works well as a one-day event, with a number of volunteer coaches packing as much as possible into four hours of instruction. It would be hard to make it a two-day camp, Poyer said, “with the baseball season going on, but we’ll see how this turns out. We always try to build every year and see what else we can do, to change or make it better. “It’s a beautiful day, we’re just going to go out there and have a good time playing football,” he said. Poyer’s busy off-season schedule had him lying to Flor- ida Saturday night, where he is training in preparation for the 2016 season. Still, “I like coming back to Astoria. This is where I played — even though I wish we had this ield when I was here. But it’s all right. We kind of helped build it,” he said, referring to the 2008 state championship team. Poyer’s 2016 off-season has “been good. Just working hard. I have a big year coming up. I’m excited and looking forward to it. It’s kind of crazy in Cleve- land right now,” he said, follow- ing the Cavaliers’ NBA Champi- onship win. The Browns are hoping to keep the excitement alive this fall. “It’s a new coaching staff coming in, and they’ve done a great job with us in the off-sea- son,” Poyer said. “I feel like our Photos by Gary Henley/The Daily Astorian Jordan Poyer signs an autograph for one of his many fans. More photos at www.dailyastorian.com. Poyer likes to get interactive with all the drills in his annual camp, held Saturday at CMH Field. One highlight of the annual Jordan Poyer Camp is the annual team picture following a day of football. team’s really coming together and working really hard.” The Browns have had an off-season illed with personnel changes, from top to bottom. New coach Hue Jackson and the management has made sev- eral key off-season acquisitions and they’ve got their top draft picks signed, while Poyer is con- sidered to be in line for a starting job at safety. “I just want to come to camp ready and focused, and just do what I’ve always done, play foot- ball,” he said. “I never like to project anything, but at the end of the day I know what I have to do coming into camp, and I have a lot of expectations of myself. There’s always competition and somebody trying to take my job, so I have to come to camp ready and prepared and ready to go. “I’m deinitely hungry to win.” WARRENTON — The Warriors’ best player was a Knight, Tuesday at Huddleston Field. Dalton Knight tossed a one-hit shutout for the Warrenton summer baseball team, as the left-hander struck out eight and walked ive in a 7-0 victory. For good measure, Knight had two of War- renton’s seven hits and drove in a run for the Warriors. Gage McFadden had Seaside’s lone hit, a double down the right ield line in the ifth inning. Travis Fenton drew three walks for the Gulls — including leadoff walks in the third and ifth innings — but Knight was just too eficient on the mound for the Gulls to mount a rally. “Dalton threw well,” said Warrenton coach Lennie Wolfe. “He kept his pitch-count down, guys made some plays behind him … Gabe Breitmeyer did a nice job at second base a cou- ple different times, and then good base-running and timely hitting.” Warrenton had all the runs it would need after just one inning, as Knight’s leadoff dou- ble in the bottom of the irst sparked a three- run rally. Kale’o Kapua drove in Knight with the irst run, and a wild pitch, two errors and a passed ball led to two more. Devin Jackson added a two-run single in the ifth inning, and Derek Ham inished with two hits and scored twice for the Warriors, who will be hosting their annual Alumni Day Satur- day at noon at Huddleston Field. “This will be our sixth one,” Wolfe said. “Last year we had over 40 players, and around 100 people who came out and enjoyed the day.” The action will start at noon, and end when “everyone feels like we’ve had enough,” Wolfe said. “It’s like sandlot. We just go and play. It’s the game that never really ends. I’m hopeful that we have at least 40 again. It’s certainly the best-attended alumni event in the county, for any sport.” SCOREBOARD SPORTS SCHEDULE SATURDAY Baseball — Dallas at Astoria Ford (2), 1 p.m.; War- renton Alumni Day, Noon SUNDAY Baseball — Dallas at Astoria Ford, 1 p.m. GET LOCAL SPORTS NEWS AT DAILYASTORIAN.COM THE DAILY ASTORIAN P.O .
