5A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • MONDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2016 Vigil: ‘Jason, our love is with you and your family’ ‘Coming together as a community like this, right now, sends a very powerful message. We care about each other. We live for each other.’ Continued from Page 1A us,” said Brian Taylor, Good- ding’s longtime friend. While on duty, Goodding was shot by Phillip Ferry, who was being arrested on a fel- ony-assault warrant. Good- ding was taken to Providence Seaside Hospital and pro- nounced dead about 40 min- utes later. Ferry, who was shot at the scene by another Seaside police of¿cer, later died of his wounds, as well. During the vigil, Taylor thanked the crowd for com- ing to remember “Jason Good- ding: husband, father, police sergeant, coach, friend, son, mentor, role model,” who was known for having a “crazy infectious smile.” During a time of great loss and sorrow such as this, Taylor said, “we want to do anything we can to help, but we feel helpless because we don’t yet know how to provide meaning- ful assistance.” He suggested looking for direction at none other than Goodding himself, who “was really good about helping people.” “When he did his job, what- ever it was … he did it the right way,” Taylor said. Another friend, Adam Israel, agreed the community Brian Taylor Sgt. Goodding’s longtime friend Joshua Bessex/The Daily Astorian Community members hold candles as they gather to honor fallen officer Jason Good- ding at Broadway Field in Seaside on Sunday night. lost a wonderful police of¿cer, but even more tragic was the loss of a wonderful person. Besides his law enforce- ment work, Goodding helped coach several local sports teams. He guided young peo- ple, and “his mentorship was second to none,” Taylor said. Goodding’s death has scarred the Seaside commu- nity and created a hole in many hearts and lives “that will never be ¿lled,” he said. However, the loss “at least can be honored.” “Coming together as a com- munity like this, right now, sends a very powerful message,” Tay- lor said. “We care about each other. We live for each other.” Goodding’s wife, Amy, and his school-aged daugh- ters, Joslyn and Jayden, in addi- tion to Goodding’s fellow Sea- side of¿cers, will need support now and in the future, Tay- lor said. Amy, a nurse at Prov- idence Seaside Hospital, was at the vigil. At Taylor’s encour- agement, participants gave her a “shout-out,” expressing their love and support. After a few moments of silence in honor of Good- ding’s memory, in the glow of a sea of handheld candles, Taylor offered a prayer, ask- ing God to help the community through this dif¿cult time. He also shared a quote from Anne Frank’s “The Diary of a Young Girl” that summed up Good- ding’s spirit. “It’s dif¿cult in times like these: ideals, dreams and cher- ished hopes rise within us, only to be crushed by grim reality,” Frank wrote. “It’s a wonder I haven’t abandoned all my ide- als, they seem so impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of every- thing, that people are truly good at heart.” “Jason, our love is with you and your family tonight and will always be before you,” Taylor concluded. “I miss you. We miss you. We will meet again.” A memorial service for Goodding will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Seaside Civic and Convention Center. The public is invited to attend. Additional venues will be identi¿ed in case the convention center reaches capacity. The service will be preceded by a law enforcement proces- sion through Seaside, ending at the convention center. Details of the route will be announced later this week, along with potential overÀow venues where the ser- vice will be broadcast. People wishing to help support the Goodding family should made donations through the Oregon Fallen Badge Foundation at www.oregon- fallenbadge.com. Goodding: He had a good relationship with Helping Hands Re-entry Outreach Centers Continued from Page 1A More than a person he col- laborated and worked with, Goodding was “a true friend,” Nilema said. When he saw Goodding, they often would talk about their shared interest in serving Seaside’s residents. “He was always telling, ‘You know, Father Nick, we have to put our efforts together to help take care of our peo- ple,’” Nilema said. As a law enforcement of¿- cer, Goodding also had a rela- tionship with Helping Hands Re-entry Outreach Centers. “He was a night sergeant and he really guaranteed the safety and the security of the shelter,” said Jay Barber, a Seaside City Council member and board member for Help- ing Hands. “If there was any issue or concern, he was there like that.” Goodding made an effort to maintain communication and relationships with the peo- ple served at the organization’s shelters, Chief (xecutive Of¿- cer Alan Evans said. He cared about them, like many of Sea- side’s of¿cers. “He made them feel like they were people,” Evans said. “He really worked close with this population of people that are struggling in our commu- nity and he cared about them. That’s what made him extra special, because he led by example.” Goodding saw the import- ant link between the organiza- tion and law enforcement and believed they both were work- ing toward the same goal of helping people in need, Evans said. Goodding liked to know everyone within the facility and build relationships with them, Evans said. “I’m sure that helped him do his job well, and we’re grateful for that,” he said. “That’s what community is about.” Barber said he cannot remember an incident like this happening in Seaside since he moved here. In a small com- munity, where people often are on a ¿rst-name basis with the law enforcement of¿cers, it can be unnerving. “For something like this to happen, it’s a real shock to our community,” Barber said. The important thing now, Barber said, is for people to “step up” and support the of¿- cer’s family and friends. “I’m hoping scholarship funds and ¿nancial support will just Àow in from the com- munity,” he added. Barber’s wife, Jan, said Seaside is good about tak- ing care of its own in times of trouble. “This community is really and truly at its very best when there is any need within our group,” she said. “It’s incred- ible to me sometimes.” Even those who are strug- gling themselves will turn up for special events and fund- raisers to support their fellow community members. “Everyone just rises to take care of each other,” Jan Bar- ber said. Goodding’s death also highlights the importance of supporting the Seaside Police Department and the of¿cers. “We have the luxury of ACCE P T IN G N E W P AT IE N T S As toria Ch irop ra ct i c B ARRY SE ARS, D .C.
