8A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2015 MOMS Club: Carrots grow easily, have lots of nutrition Continued from Page 1A Some children, like 8-year-old Nora Duff of Gearhart, dug for caterpillars almost as often as carrots; ZKHQ 'XII IRXQG D ÀXRUHV- cent-striped one, her peers dropped everything for a group inspection. Backyard bounty For the second carrot harvest in 2013, Brim’s Farm & Garden in Astoria donated a pound of carrot seeds to the food bank — and the MOMS Club has used those seeds ever since, which has so far produced about 10,000 pounds of car- rots. Last year alone, the group harvested about 5,000 pounds. And there’s plenty of seeds left, so the initial 1-pound donation may end up producing about 20,000 pounds of carrots, according to Dusten Martin, food bank operations manager. Why carrots? They’re easy to grow, they have great nutritional value, and they’re widely appealing to children and adults, he said. The MOMS Club plants the seeds in mid-spring, then thins them out a few months later, and the food bank keeps the carrots watered and well-kept. After the food bank was built in 2010, the backyard sat idle for some time before the staff decided to grow food on it. “We’re kind of go-getters here, the crew at the food bank,” Martin said. “Our thoughts were: ‘People have been growing things for millennia. We can figure it out.’” They didn’t plan on hav- ing an outside group volun- teering their time to make it happen. “It’s grown into some- thing we didn’t expect it to grow into,” he said.
