2015 regatta signature events Photos by Scott Docherty / www.redhare.com Admiral’s Reception SeamEn's Memorial Ceremony When: 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 7 Where: Astoria Maritime Memorial Park. 10 Bay Street and Marine Drive. Directly under the southern high rise of the Megler Bridge in Uniontown, Astoria, OR The public is invited to attend the Astoria Regatta Seamen’s Memorial Ceremony Friday, Aug.7 at 11 a.m. at the Astoria Maritime Memorial Park in Uniontown. Civic, industry and Coast Guard leaders will be on hand to formally honor those who have past served in the local maritime industry, from military seamen to commercial fishermen. In addition to the general public attending shoreside, the Astoria Regatta committee invites all interested mariners to join the Columbia River Bar Pilots, Coast Guard, and Tongue Point Job Corps vessels in the river just north of the park. This is the third year the ceremony has been held, and has quickly become one of the signature events of the Regatta Festival, which started in 1894, and has its roots in the Columbia River. All vessels are requested to monitor channel 13 and energize their horns as the ceremonial wreath is dropped into the river by the Coast Guard Sector Columbia River Commander, Capt. Dan Travers. The Holiday Inn Express will be providing refreshments after the ceremony. regatta square When: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8 Where: 12th Street and Duane Street (Heritage Square) Sponsors: Ohana Media Group and Providence Seaside Hospital Astoria Regatta central — this is the happening place! Check out Regatta Square before, during and after the Grand Land Parade. This location along 12th Street, between Duane and Exchange streets, is the home of the de- licious salmon barbecue, thirst-quenching beer garden, children’s Fun Zone and entertainment-filled Main Stage. Bring your appetite to the barbecue, which will feature salmon. Our talented chefs will be cooking on site, so you’ll have tasty food right off the grill. The beer garden will feature local brews from Fort George Brewery and Buoy Beer. Musical groups will be performing on stage after the Grand Land Parade. The parade entries will be announced by Ohana Media’s Tom Freel from Regatta Square as the participants pass by, and the parade awards will be an- nounced from the stage after the parade. The City of Astoria is also providing cake at 3 p.m. as a celebration of Willis Van Dusen (Astoria Regatta Grand Marshal in 2015) in honor of his many years of service and dedication to the City of Astoria. This year, the children’s Fun Zone will also be located at Regatta Square. Bring your children to jump and play and experience the games and activities that will be set up for their enjoyment. Regatta Square will be the hub of activity Saturday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Come enjoy the food, music, beer, entertainment, award ceremonies and children’s activities. Come shop at the Sidewalk Faire throughout downtown. Proceed then to the Highwater Boat Parade viewing spot on the 17th Street dock at 5:30 p.m., enjoy Second Saturday Art Walk downtown, have dinner from one of the many outstanding restaurants in the region and end the day viewing the Regatta Festival Fireworks from the East End Mooring Basin at dusk. The Astoria Regatta Association is proud to honor our 2015 Regatta Admiral Pat Reiten, president and chief executive officer of PacifiCorp Transmission. Reiten has strong ties to the Pacific Northwest, having previously served as president and CEO of Pacific Power — a company that started in Astoria — and has enjoyed many years of family ties to the Gearhart area. Admiral’s Aide Andrew Bornstein, co-owner of Bornstein’s Seafood, will also be honored. Miss Clatsop County Alexis Mather will open the program with “The Star Spangled Banner,” and then dignitaries will be introduced and honored. Mac Burns and Paulette Hankel McCoy will share the role of master of ceremonies. Teevin Brothers and Warrenton Fiber-Nygaard Logging have generously sponsored this evening’s event at the historic Liberty Theater. Come mingle under the stunning chandeliers, munching on signature appetizers provided by some of our notable local restaurants, while enjoying you favorite beverage. Highwater Boat Parade When: 5:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 8 Where: On the Columbia River Sponsor: Englund Marine and Industrial Supply A tradition of immense importance to the heritage of the Astoria Regatta Festival is the Highwater Boat parade. Boaters are invited to float down the Columbia River starting at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. The floating parade features boats from all over. The parade sets sail at the West End Mooring Basin, past the 17th Street dock – the key viewing spot – and the procession loops back around and ends back at the West End Mooring Basin for the awards ceremony. Boats of all sizes are welcome, and are encouraged to decorate with a nautical theme to compete for one of the awards that will be given out after the parade at the Yacht Club at the West Mooring Basin. All are invited to attend. The five award categories are: “Best of Power,” “Best of Sail,” “Best of Classic,” “Best of Commercial” and “Queen’s Choice.” Boat participation is free, but pre-registration is required. Registration can be completed at Englund Marine and Industrial Supply in Astoria or at www.astoriaregatta.com.
