10A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • TUESDAY, MAY 12, 2015 JOSHUA BESSEX — The Daily Astorian JOSHUA BESSEX — The Daily Astorian Local artists sift through the various clay pieces recovered from the paper kiln on Sat- urday. Charred remains of clay and wood were all that remained after the paper kiln burned down Friday night. Kiln: People gathered around the collapsed ruins Continued from Page 1A The Maori artists surround- ed the pieces in a wooden tepee of thick branches and boards of Douglas fir, pine and alder, covering it all with a layer of newspapers dunked in a mixture of clay and water. The outside of the paper kiln was coated with layers of news- paper dunked in clay and water. Due to the high heat inside the paper kiln, it had to be constantly maintained and patched with new paper throughout the day and night. Firing the tepee The Maoris lit small fires next to two openings on either side of the kiln, burning them down to coals and pushing them under the grate inside. By the middle of the night, the outer layer of clay hard- ened and the inside became an inferno burning up the wood around the clay art pieces, releasing a column of flame from a top vent. Karuna Douglas, a glaze technician and wife of visit- ing artist Todd Douglas, said the kiln can fire at up to 1,000 degrees Celsius, or around 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit. It burned through the night, the brittle clay exterior eventually collapsing as the wood burned to ash. JOSHUA BESSEX The Daily Astorian The morning after Late Saturday morning, people gathered around the collapsed ruins of the kiln to sift through the rubble of thin clay-crusted paper fragments and ash. David Campiche, owner of The Shelburne Inn in Seaview, Wash., extracted from the ruins a small clay bottle topped with the miniature bear — an urn, he said, to hold a family member’s ashes. Many of the pieces, some too wet before entering the kiln, fell victim to pops of breaking clay KHDUGWKURXJKRXWWKH¿ULQJSUR- cess. But many came out intact, including a seashell-shaped rep- resentation of Hine-ahu-one, the ¿UVWZRPDQLQWKH0DRUL$GDP and Eve story, that Halliday had bisqued in advance and brought for the workshop. “I’ve lost a whole series of work,” Halliday said of trying to learn the paper kiln process, ZKLFK VKH KDV GRQH DERXW ¿YH WLPHV ³$QG ZKDW GR \RX GR" You make more.” EDWARD STRATTON — The Daily Astorian Visiting Maori artist Rhonda Halliday shows off her piece, a bisqued, seashell-shaped representation of Hine-ahu-one, the first woman in the first pair of hu- mans in her indigenous culture, to community mem- bers attending weekend clay workshops at Clatsop Community College. The visiting Maori artists encouraged local artists to experiment with different materials when firing clay pieces.
