SPORTS THE DAILY ASTORIAN • THURSDAY, MARCH 19, 2015 7A Loggers get defensive in win; Fishermen down Cardinals By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian KNAPPA — The highest scoring baseball team in the state also has a great pitching staff, and — from the looks of it — one of the best defensive teams as well. What’s it all mean? The Knappa Loggers are going to be next to impossible to beat this season. The Clatskanie Tigers have pretty much given up on the idea, at least for this school year. After losing to the Loggers in football and basketball, the Tigers added baseball to the list of “stuff that Knappa is better than us at,” as the Log- gers defeated Clatskanie 6-2 in a season-opening baseball game Wednesday at Teevin Field. “Our seniors have lost a lot of games to those kids over the years, so the kids certain- ly felt good about that one,” said Knappa coach Jeff Mill- er, whose team has lost season openers to Clatskanie the last two years. Although after last sea- son’s opening day loss, the Loggers won 28 in a row, and did not lose again until the 2A VHPL¿QDOV “Clatskanie is obviously a good, quality veteran team,” JOSHUA BESSEX — The Daily Astorian Astoria’s Joe Brawley, No. 11, drives in two runs with a double in the first inning.
