A Bumper Crop Expected This Writer Wants to Take Measures for Them. Editor Times: Will you permit me to call attention to the fruit growers of Benton county to ! the tecessity of forming some or ganization or plan to market our fruit for the coming season. . The prospects for a fine fruit crop especially apples is very bright growers generally have , paid at tention to early spraying, and if the good work is continued I look for a bumper crop of fine apples in Ben ton county. Now comes the question what are we going to do with them ? Many of you think all you have to do is to raise fine fruit and the rest is easy, but let me tell you, grow ing the fruic is only half the work and the easiest half at that too. The Corvallis market is good and takes a good many apples in small lots, that it has not been overstock ed is I believe chiefly owing to so lew growers producing clean ap ples. Now that spraying is more generally practiced I look for a large lot of clean apples. It will be im possible for one local market to handle them they must be shipped. To realize any fair price for them they must be properly packed, properly shipped and above all, properly sold. That is where Hoed River and Rogue River growers have the great advantage over us, our apples and other fruit are fine, perhaps almost as good as are pro duced anywhere, but when it comes to selling tnem m large lots we don't know the first principle of the business. But we can learn and if we are to make a success of the business we can and must dc so. Take a good horticultural pa per, Better Fruit published by E H. Shepardof Hood River, is about the best I know of, you 'can see by it the thoroughly systematic ' work that is done by ; the Hood River grower that has given him such a splendid reputation. Now I will ask every apple grow er in Benton county to write to me, telling me what amount and var. eties of apples you will have, and make suggestions as to the best way to dispose of them, and I will try to answer all letters and we will consider what are the best ways to market our crops.
