The teachers of the Mllwaukio high and grammar schools with the janitors and their wives made up a merry party after school Tuesday afternoon and went out to Lakewood and sur prised Mrs. Shaw the grammar school principal at her home whare a delight ful time was had until a late hour. After Mrs. Shaw had recovered from the surprise she proved a splendid hostess and the evening passed away all to soon. The schools are closing on May 8. Uuder the leadership ot Mrs. Shaw and Prof. Wakefield the year has been very successful. The American Legion and the Wo man's auxiliary to the American Le gion secured the Crystal Lake Park tor Sunday July 4th and will stage the biggest 4th ot July celebration of the season. The Legion people will announce the shortly. It will be the finest ever. A number of the high school stu dents were out to the Rifle Range at Clackamas to see the base ball game Sunday afternoon. Mrs. H. W. Hub who has been In the Sellwood hospital for the past two weeks was able to be taken home Sunday. The team belonging to the Mln thorn Springs Dairy run away from sear East Milwaukie Into the business section this morning when the team was finally caught .Two boys were in the milk wagon when the '"team started on their wild run both jump ed and were not injured except a shak ing up. The team and wagon were not 'injured at all. Francis Mclntrye who had his knee injured several days ago in the Shingle mill Is getting along nicely. Sam Riley who was seviously Injur ed while at work in the Shingle mill two weeks ago is still at St. Vincents hospital but Is Improving as well as can be expected. He is allowed com pany now and manw friends have been calling on him. COMMITS SUICIDE AT OF GREENVILLE, 111., May 18. Har ley O. Beasely, 25 years old, alleged murder of his wife and two boy babies, today committed suicide over his wife's grave In Bethleftem cemetery, three miles from here. Beasley shot himself in the right temple. Beasley had been hunted by about thirty possemen almost continuously since last Friday. A woods near here bad been combed twice, but Beasley was not found. Shortly before noon today he emerged from the woods ac companied by his brother, Delmar, and visited the graves of his wife and two sons. His eyes became tear-dimmed, his brother said, and before he could be restrained, drew a revolver from his pocket and kneeling at the graveside, pulled the trigger. May 19. The Long fellow Club ot Portland was enter talned Wednesday evening, May 12, at home of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Evans. Officers were elected as follows: John King, president; Metta B. Spalding has gone to Baker City, Ore, on business and Mrs. Spalding is spending the time between friends la Portland and Oak Grove. Mrs. D. Oiler and family have rent ed their home in Portland and going to spend the summer In Oak Grove with Mrs. Oiler's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Riley. Mrs. V. G. Benire made a business trip to Oregon City Tuesday. Mrs. E. A. Parsons and Mrs. F. L. Bailey ot Portland were guesta of Mrs. F. A. Smith Wednesday. W. K. Miller of Dayton is spending several days here repairing his pro perty here. Thos. F. Ryan, Harvey E. Cross, Brenton Vedder, G. , Dlmlck were speakers Wednesday evening under auspices ot political department ot Social Service club at which time the measures that were to appear on the ballot were explained. Mrs. R. R. Davenport was in Port land Wednesday on business. Some time Saturday .bight about 200 young chickens belonging to J. Lindsay were stolen from pen in back yard. . Mr. Lindsay had had them but a few weeks receiving them from California and it is quite a loss. PERSOXNALS OF SILVER TEA OSWEGO, Ore., May 19. Chijds and her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Frank Childs, has been on fie sick list for a few days. Mrs. Bailey left Tuesday tor Cal ifornia to be gone several months. She has been spending the winter with her daughter here Mrs. Fred Steffen. Mr. and Mrs. Pregley have pur chased the Claries Nexon home on Second and C and have moved their family here. f Mrs. Hardy of Victoria, B. C.,' is spending several weeks with her friend, Mrs. L. C. CASEY CONTINUED "TROM PACE 3 WOOD PAYS BIG FINE FOR SHOOTING IN CANBY CANBY, Ore.. May, 19. William Main wood, residing just out ot the city limits and north ot fauby, who shot a pet dog at the homo of Mr. and Mrs. Deere, has paid his fine of $S0 for carrying a concealed Mainwood was arrested by Officer Charles Bowland, and brought before the Justice of the peace, William Knight, who set the. fine of $S0. Mainwood's act caused much fool ing among his neighbors and residents of this city, for the shot was fired near several children who were close to the dog. The dog, which Is con sidered harmless, but has' a tiablt ot barking, had followed Mainwood for a short distance while Mainwood was at the Iteere home. Mainwood com manded the dog to go back, and as the animal had turned to go back from which he came, it was shot. The dog suffered agony, and Mrs. Deere plead ed to Mainwood to end its sufferings, but instead, Mrs. Deere said, he used an oath and turned away refusing to do so, and by careful treatment the dog is improving and Us life will be saved. The dog was a gift from an Oregon City friend, and Is a pet of fie Deere family. JALENTED CANBY GIRL ENGAGEMENT CANBY, Ore.. May 19. Miss Martha Lorraine Lee, the accomplished daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Lee, of this city, will leave the seventh of June tp till an engagement as a soloist with an Italian band with a cbautauqua circuit. Miss I.ee. who s to be ac companied by her mother on the tour, will sing In Washington, Idaho and Oregon, her engagement to extend three month's. Miss Lee is looking forward to with pleasure of the delightful trip that is before her, and is busily engaged in selecting and rehearsing her num bers. When asked by a reported of the Enterprise s to the selections she is to sing, the charming girl smiled and said, "Well, I will sing an Aria, ballads, semi-popular and popular song." Miss Lee, Who has a most charming personality, possesses a rich lyric-soprano voice. She has appeared before many audiences, the last to appear before was at the luncheon given by W. P. Hawley at the Hawley Pulp & Paper company's plant, Wednesday, when the Live Wires of Oregon City and the Ad club of Portland were the guests. She received an ovation and was presented with an armful of beau tiful carnations. Miss Lee has been a student of Mrs. Nieta Barlow Lawrence, of Oregon City tor the past two years, and Is still continuing her instruction from Mrs. Lawrence, and much credit is dup the latter for the tutoring she Is giving the talented girl. A total of 430.342 gallons of gasoline and 60,685 gallons of distillate were sold In Oregon dur ing April by th Union Oil company, according to a statement submitted to the secretary of state's office Tues day.
