The Cot Kits IIkKAU) says in its last issue that it only charged f 2 25 an inch fjr sheriff sales. In the issue of July 7. 1S'.9. in discussing the Enterprise and this same charge that paper used this language: "It (the Enterprise) stated last week that we charged 3 for sheriff sales w hen we agreed to do it lor 2 25. I We did not agree to do eo and don't propose to, either." This statement by that paper was followed by a chkrge not only of 3 but it leaded the notice as well si msking an increase of at least in the length of the notice, making the charge about $3.75. In the case of Jones vs. Barney et a) that pajr charged $3 an inch for a leaded notice which was paid by Benton Killen, the attorney in the case. Is it possible that the Courier- Herald ia getting, alarmed as its con tract in nearly out, and is making a pretense of living up to it T No nation on earth will ever make Uncle Sam take water, as lung as he can take land. The populiets of the county are going to walk up to the block as they did in 1S98 and be butchered. The city of Albany is now raising a company of volunteers to 6ll up the gap in the 3d regiment 0. N. G. The total output of lumber for Oregon during the year 1 699 was 609,050,000 feet, of which Clackamas county furnished 11,750,000 feet. There is one point upon w hich Bryan lias never changed hie mind, and that Is the advisability of his standing candi dacy for president. Ir we do our duty aright in the Phil ippines, we will add to our national re nown the advancement of general civili zation, which is the highest and finest part of national life; we will greatly benefit the people of the Phi'ippine islands, and, above all, we will play our part well in the great work of uplifting mankind. But to do this work, keen r ever in mind that we must show in a very high degree, the q-ialities of coursge, honesty and good judgment. Resistance must be stamped out. The first and all important work to be done is to establish the sopremecy of our flag. We must put down armed resistance before we Cao accomplish anj thing else, and there should be no parleying, no faltering, in dealing with our foe. As for those in our own country, like the Courier-Herald, who attacked our Own Oregon City boys while in the Philippines, we can afford to contemptuously disregard them ; but it must be remembered that their utter ances are saved from being treasonable merely from the fact ttiat they are des picable. of Clackamas county to file their appli cation (or this valuable acquisition. It is something new in the West and is proving a decided success. The Linn county hog is again turned loose in the alley and has grunted until that county Las succeeded in establish ing two free delivery districts, one around Shedd, the other around llalsey. It is this persistent claiming and ceasless denuding that acquires these places, ane Linn county Is known all over the tate by the yulgar appellation ol "the state hog" simply because she has a standing application op file for anything that is a gift of the state or nation. In politics she has the district attorney, chief justice of supreme court, attorney, general, and snpervior of census, nd never fails to keep on hand a candidate for congress. Speaking of the free delivery system recently established in that county, the Albany Democrat says : "The one around llalsey will begin Apnl 1 and will cover a circumference of 23 miles, the distance the carrier will ride each day. It will be west of the city taking in Peoria and reach north to within a mile of Shedd. The carrier, besides delh ering the mail will carry postage stamps and money order blanks, in fact, will be a regular traveling post office." It is now Clacksmaa county's turn, and lie should rise op and claim everything in sight, make solemn demands and never cease until she gains recognition. This way she might regin some of the public presents w hich other counties en joy and of which she ha always beer, denied. l-een. Boer sr reorviipylnt towns taken by Bii'ish. They cannot be caught with that ind of stuff. It is said that Dr. Straight got some pointed information as to where the sil ver democrats have been pasturing when lie attempted to welcome some gold dem ocrals back to the fold. The Dewey candidacy makes no diff erence with the two great national con ventions. The republicans will nomi nate McKinley, the democrats will nomi nate Bryan and McKinley will be elected. Whenever the British are defeated by the Boers they call it falling into a trap, wilh the British retreating in splendid order, while the Boers follow them up in great confusion. When a ticket is put up, ,js the one was at last Friday's conveu tion.it is a confession that it stands for nothing but spoils, and if the promoters have any principles they are perfectly willing to put them aside for the chance at the spoils, small as the cliance is. This conglomeration of noli- tical pot hunters haye put up a ticket, that must in all honesty stand for naught, but that the nominees want the pie. Can they honestly put forth any other claim? Let us see if these men are better fitted for tiieir places than the republican nominees. For the county board the republicans put up Killen and Lewellen.
