One cause of the low standing of the teacher's calling is lack of extended professional training. Professions easily entered are not usually highly respect ed. The medical profession has been cited as an illustration. Not long ago. when one could be a physician without special training, the profession was not very highly esteemed. Now, when ex tended training is demanded both by public opinion and by law, the profes sion is respected as one of the highest In like manuer the teaching profession wonld undoubtedly increase in favor were training of a high order demand ed In fact, we find the respect for the profession varying in different countries and in different grades of the school system almost in direct ratio to the education and professional training re- a aired of candidates. forme VTaaUaV A lad in one of tba London board schools was found guilty of a serious in traction of discipline and was directed by his teacher to. tell his mother when ha got home what misdemeanor he had committed. DEWEY AS A DISCIPLINARIAN Bis Method of SnbdalBaT Soma Refractory Sailor. "I was with Commodore Dewey when be was the executive officer of the Colo rado," said a financier, "and I remem ber one incident which shows the man ner of man he ia We bad fine crew, some of them as powerful men as I ever sr. Four or five of them went aaborw one day and came back fighting drank. "Three of them were men who wonld singly have been more than a match in strength for John L Sullivan. The or der was given to put them In irons, and it wsa found Impossible to carry out the order, for the men were dangeron. Dewey was notified of the situation, He waj writing s letter In hie room at the time. "He went to the place where thewe giants were and he told them to come ont and submit to the irons. Tbey did not stir. Then Dewey said quietly to an orderly, 'Bring me my revolvers,' and when he had his pistols he again called upon the men to come out, but they did not mora Then he said, 'I am going to count three. If yon are not out here with your bands held np on the third count, yon won't come out of that place alive.' "He counted one, then he cocked the revolvers, and he counted two. We all expected to hear the report, for we knew that Dewey meant what he said. The men knew it too. They stopped out jnst In time to save their lives and held np their bands, and tbey had been partial ly sobered by their fright and the moral effect of Dewey's glance. ' One of them said afterward that when he saw Dowcy's eyes ho knew that he wonld either be a dead Jackie in a moment or he would have to yield, and when the irons were pat upon him he was as sober as he ever was in his lifa Dowey went back to bis room and finished the letter he was writing." Philadelphia Press. "The Lucky DofTa." 'The Lncky Duffs" is the title of an article in The English Illutrtratod Maga zine in which Mr. J. M. Bullock traces the rise of the Duke of Fife, like a prince in a fairy tale, from a little farmer in the north of Scotland 200 years ago. One good woman of the house used to rido to market with a hnge pile of plaiding, which she had spun from her sheep, in the croupor be side her and duly brought bock its value in merks. Those she hoarded in bags. On one occasion she banked ber savings in a leather bag in the ceiling, but the rats got at it, so that the family dined amid a downpour of ducatoons. The family flourished so well that each of her three sons got an estate of his own Patrick, the youngest, bringing 86 children into the world, while Wil liam became the father of the first Earl of Fife. Queen Wllhelmlnaw There Is no longer any doubt that Wilholmina, queen of the Netherlands, is engaged to marry Prince Bombard of Saxe- Weimar, who is now 20 years of age and the second son of the late hereditary Prince of Weimar. The yonng queen has lately been in Paris seeing the sights and selecting a trous seau. Her dresses, rides In the Bols and goodness of face and character have been items of interest in the Paris jour nals.
