Average cost per capita as shown enrollment, $12.40. Respectfully submitted, Tiios. F. Ryan, Clerk School District No. 62 DfPKRISTKSDKNT 8 RKPOHT. City Superintendent Holmes submit ted the following report which was or dered placed on file : To the honorable board of directors and the patrons of the Oregon City pub lic schools: In making a report in March, the superintendent is somewhat at a disadvantage, because if he compile it from this school year, he has but five months; and if he compile it from nine months he must consider two fractions of different school years. I shall glean such data from both these sources aa I consider will be of interest to you. During the five months just closed we have enrolled 713 pupils and for the same time last year we enrolled 693, making a gain this year of 20 pupils or about three per cent. The number of pupils in the district as shown by the clerk's report, being the same as last year, shows a sat isfactory gain. Our average daily attendance, how ever for these five months is 508, for the corresponding time last year it was 554, making a gain in daily attendance of 44, or eight per cent. The total enrollment for the nine months just closed is 703, for the pre vious year it was 702. In the average daily attendai.ee, however, for the last nine months of school we find quite satis factory gain, it being 678 a compared with 033 for the previous year, gain of 45 pupils or over 8 per cent. We have remodeled the course of stuily to conform with Portland's course and have bettered and strengthened it in many particulars. We still promote most of the pupils on meritorious daily work, and believe it to be more satisfactory than any other system. In conclusion I wish to embrace this opportunity of extending a cordial invi tation to all patrons to visit the schools. When we snd outipncial or personal invitations, we foel called upon for, and you expect, some unusual program, which will hardly give you a correct idea of our daily work. Consider yourselves each and all personally invited to vieit our daily work. 8. W. Iloi.ku, Superintendant. DIREcTOks' BKPOBT. The following report of the board of directors was read by the chairman and ordered filed : To the taxpayers and patrons of school district, No. 62, Clackamas county, Ore gon. The ondersignsd board of directors beg leave to submit the following report : School opened on September 28th with 14 teachers, the salaries remaining the same as last year with the exception of IVof. McAdams, whom your board be lieved to be jnstified in raising from $100 per month to $100J per year. All of the rooms were well filled and some of them crowded, especially the eighth grade, and in distributing the work so as to avoid the expense of procuring and fur nishing another room and employing another teacher it became necessary to transfer 19 pupils from the 8iu grade, which is at the Eastham school to the Barclay school and assign tbeir several recitations to four different teachers. We did this after mature deliberation as for the best interests of taxpayers and patrons and we hope that no parent will feel grieved at the small inconven ience thus placed upon their children. These pupils were not neglected in the least but simply inconvenienced in going to different rooms for recitations. . Your board also in compliance with a tax levied for that purpose one vear ago reeAted two rooms with new desks at $3.30 per desk, also remodeled the furnace pipes at the Eastham school at an expense of $90 also had erected two storm doors at the same building at the south entrance. Total cost of repairs to building $159.41. We hare also purchased one set of maps, complete at a cost of $80, also one map of Oregon for each building and one combination ghbe for each building, which with mathmetical blocks, charts, maps etc. ' previously purchased, we believe the schools to be well supplied with the necessary apparatus for the present. We would further suggest that steps be taken to hasten the completion of the sidewalk from Seventh street to Eleventh on Jefferson for the better accommodation of pupils from southern part of the district. Respectfully submitted, J. W. Noblk, Chairman. It was unanimously voted that the matter of non-resident children paying tuition should be left to the discretion of the board of directors. The thanks of the district were ten dered the board of directors and the clerk for the able and efficient manner in which the affairs of the district bad been conducted during the year. Both the directors and the city super intendant emphasized the necessity of the completion of sidewalks to the Barclay building so as to make it more accessabln during the rainy season. I'p To Date Serylce. A great many Pacific Coast people, when contemplating a trip east and when bringing friends west, know yery little about the interior lines, and the object of this article is to afford reliable informa tion. In the first place for good time and service, select a route via St. Paul and Minneapolis, because the lines that way are continuous under one system with out any change of cars, and every man, from peanut agent up, is a courteous, re liable and experienced officer, ready to aid and protect you in any emergency and capable of making you feel at home and comfortable during the long journey. Then see that your ticket reads via the Wisconsin Central lines because that thoroughfare affords strictly first-class service, and the meals on its dining cars (always reasonable in price) are equalled by few and excelled by none. Geo. S. Batty, 246 Stark St., Portland, Oregon, is general agent for this company and will cheerfully furnish you a neat and handy calendar and full information on the sub ject of transportation, if addressed or called upon, and any agent will, upon application, sell you a ticket over the Wisconsin Central lines.
