Bushong's building on the corner of Jefferson and Eleventh streets, occupied by Mrs. Kinder, caught fire from a defective flue last Saturday afternoon about 6 o'clock, and was damaged to the extent of a few hundred dollars, fully covered by Insurance. The fire department responded promptly to the alarm, but owing to the distance to the Are and the fact that it was up-hill most of the way, consider able time elapsed before it was reached. It was necessary to lay a line of hose lor three blocks in order to reach a hydrant. The fire laddies made short work of it when they got there. This is the first alarm of fire for more than six months. City School Report. The following is the summary of the Oregon City public schools for the month ending February 19, 1897. A great many Pacific Coast people, when contemplating a trip east and when bringing friends west, know very little about the interior lines, and the object of this article is to afford reliable informa tion. In the first place for good time and service, select a route via St. Paul and Minneapolis, because the lines that way are continuous under one system with out any change of caru( and every man, from peanut agent np, is a courteous, re liable and experienced officer, ready to aid and protect you in any emergei.cy and capable of making yon feel at home and comfortable during the long journey. " Then ee that your ticket reads via the Wisconsin Central lines because that thoroughfare affords strictly first-class service, and the meals on its dining cars (always reasonable in price) are equalled by few and excelled by none. Geo. S. Batty, 24'J Stark Bt., Portland, Oregon, is general agent for this company and will cheerfully furnish you a neat and bandy calendar and full information on the sub ject of transportation, if addrossed or called upon, and any agent will, upon application, sell you a ticket over the Wisconsin Central lines. The "Blue Book" gives complete instruction for office seekers of both sexes, and is besides a valuable book of reference much in demand. Easter Hats and Bonnets. A novel method of presenting the newest and freshest Eastertide creations of Paris milliners has been adopted by The Ladies' Home Journal for March. In that magazine the new French hats and bonnets will be pictured as they are worn. This unique display is useful, therefore, in pointing out clearly not only Fashion's decree, but the styles in headdress best suited to several con trasted types and faces. Ladies and Gentlemen: la response to your request that 1' should be a candidate for the office of school direc tor at the coming school election. I desire to say that I would prefer not to accept the candidacy, because if elected, the duties of the office will require more time than I can conveniently devote to it. But realizing the fact that some one must give his time and attention to the matter, and bearing in mind that it is an office without salary cr compensa tion. I feel that it is not the part of a good citizen to shirk trouble and respon sibility in public affairs and to refuse to bear his share of the burdens of govern ment, I will therefore accept the pro posed candidacy and if nominated and elected will endeavor to do my full duty as a director. Respectfully yours, Charles H. Cai'field. The President's Daily Rontine. Ex-President Harrison has written of "A Day with the President at his Desk" for the March Ladies Home Journal. The article is said to be singularly inter esting in the detail with which it de scribes the wearisome routine of the presideut. It is said that General Har rison, in this article, has delivered him self with great directness and vigor, rel ative to the annoyances that are visited upon a chief executive by persistent office seekers, and he suggests a unique plan, by which the president's burdens in that direction could be greatly light ened, and he be enabled to devote more attention to more important matters. A feature of the article that will have a timely interest to those ambitious to serve the country under the incoming administration, describes very fully how the president makes appointments to office. "A Day with the President at hia Desk" is unique in being the first time that the daily life of the president baa been described by one who has filled the exalted office. Articles opon the social and domestic life of the president by General Harrison will follow in succes sive issues of the Journal. The Ladies' Home Journal, Philadel phia. " H. E.
