The center is a 30,000 square foot metal building con- structed in 1979 and leased from Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R). Hidden behind the original met- al siding, and not noticeable to the casual passerby, the St Johns Racquet Center has had its dete- riorating structural skeleton and leaking gutter system upgraded so that the public and the local kids of the PAST&E program can have a structurally sound and dry environment in which to play and learn the game of tennis. A team comprised of PAST&E, a non-profit, Portland Parks & Rec- reation, R&H Construction, TM Rippey Structural Engineers, and LRS Architects worked together to create what is hoped to be a spring- board for PAST&E Executive Di- rector, Danice Brown’s dream to convert this aging facility into one that gives their Scholar Athletes access to quality instruction both on and off the court and to make them successful in their academ- ic and athletic pursuits. Future phases seek to provide upgraded restroom and locker room spaces and accessibility to future upstairs family dining area, conference spaces, and classroom spaces. Cathedral Park Jazz Festival announces poster competition By Arthur Marx As was done last year, and was an outstanding success, the Fes- tival Organizers have announced the opening of the request for pro- posals from the general public to submit artwork to be used on the 2015 Cathedral Park Jazz Festival poster. There are no formal guide- lines, but historically the selection has included a graphic or photo of the St. Johns Bridge (arches, etc.), a jazz music theme, whether an in- strument or portrait/silhouette of a musician, and anything else that identifies with Cathedral Park. There is no cash award for the winner, but as long as the art work is released to the Festival it is be- ing discussed to provide a small percentage of any poster sales to the submitter. The deadline to submit will be May 11 and you can email your interest, questions The next issue of the REVIEW is the St. Johns PARADE class, as is most of the Jazz artist that Cathedral Park Jazz Festival presents.
