As the editor/publisher, I prefer readers make Gayla Patton their own decision and Editor form their own opinions based on what has been presented to them. And, when publishing articles on hot topics, I strive to present both sides fairly. I’ve done that with the Pembina Propane Terminal project by printing Pembina’s letters with- out editing, and Barbara Quinn’s articles in the same format. Having said that, with legitimate concerns raised regarding the proposed pro- pane terminal, purhaps it’s time for the community to get involved, because it could affect livability in North Portland. I’m basing these thoughts the same way you, the readers, will base yours: from what I’ve read and studied. I do not have any inside in- formation, only what has been made available. If you feel strongly , one way or another, about Pembina’s Propane Terminal on the shores of the Columbia River and between St. Johns and West Hayden Island, now is the time to start speaking about it. Find an informed way to logical- ly, calming, and insightfully speak your opinion. With the Planning and Sustainabil- ity Commission’s approval for the project to move forward, this issue is now in the hands of Portland City Council. Mayor Hales hasn’t hidden his position on this subject, so the decision will lie in the hands of the other commissioners. The Review will keep readers as informed as possible with new de- velopments and planned meetings and get-togethers. There will be a chance for public discussions, but I caution those interested in voicing their opinions to do so judiciously, with thoughtfulness, and in a man- ner that will get respect, not just to gain negative attention to this im- portant issue or to deflect from the main purpose. Back in the mid to late 1990’s there were three heated issues in North Portland where residents, businesses and neighborhood asso- ciations banned together. One was an outdoor amphi-theater next to the Expo, another was the Wapato Jail that Multnomah County want- ed to build by the I-5 freeway next to P.I.R. and the other was a toxic waste dump on East Hayden Island in a sand pit. Community members won them all – and it wasn’t by dis- rupting meetings, being rowdy or defacing anyone’s property. It was by knowing the issues and with respect for those on the other side, carefully wording all statements made to help proponents understand our point of view and concerns. If you have apprehensions about the Pembina Propane Terminal, join your community leaders, neigh- borhood associations or another community group. Now is the time. Remember, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. You may also write letters to the Review and they will be forwarded to the proper groups for insertion into any public testimony. Until next issue, stay safe. Gayla One last note: In previous issues (of the Review) on this project I have presented both sides (with articles) so readers could form their own opinions. In this is- sue is just Barbara Quinn’s article, although I did offer Gary Conkling of CFM Strategic Communications to send his statement, but he said, “I have nothing to forward at this time, but will continue to send you news advisories or press releases. Your consideration of them is ap- preciated.” North Portland Meetings The following free listings are meetings for North Portland organizations. A third pictures may also be used as space allows. At the end of 2015 (most likely in November,) the pictures will be voted upon by read- ers for which photo reader’s liked the best. The winner will receive a $100 cash prize from the Review. Pictures must be: *Sent in high resolution (200+) and sent to reviewnewspaper@comcast.net or review- newspaper@gmail.com in JPEG format. * Pictures may be cropped (by the Review) to fit the paper’s perimeters. For photos ap- pearing in the Masthead they need to be vertical more than horizontal. Masthead pictures are 10.25” across, and 3” to 5” tall. Pictures of the Week can be vertical or horizontal and any size. * Pictures appearing in the paper must belong to taker of the picture, but the Review has the right to use them in current and future issues. * Color pictures are preferred, but outstanding black & whites might be used. * Photos used in 2013 and/or 2014 may be sent and used again. * If multiple photos are sent at one time by a photographer, the Review will use judgment for the picture (or pics) we think will print best in the paper. * Since this is a first, these rules may change during the year, or more suggestions and rules added. (We’ll learn as we go.) * One vote per person. Voting begins in November where all the year’s pictures will be re-shown. (Disclaimer: Pictures appearing in the paper are reformatted to tiff’s at 600 resolution for printing presses. After placement in the paper and being printed on newsprint, the photos may lose a certain amount of clarity.
