Holmes is believed to bo internally injured. Extension of tho city limits on the poninsula to includo water frontago as far cast as tho Col umbia river is proposed by tho city docks commission. Tho city nttornoy has boon asked t3 draw up a charter amendment to annox this torritory, which will add millions of dollars to the laxablo property of the city. The amendment will have to bo voted upon at the noxt general election. The territory includ ed in the proposed annexation would take in tho property of tha Swift Packing Co., and would giro Portland almost as long a frontage on the Columbia river as it has on the Willamotte. A huge bear, its carcass tip ping the scales at 302 pounds, was shot by Ross Winnns near Dee. The bear, believed to have taken more than twenty sheep from flocks pasturing in tho neighorhood last summer and fall, has been placed on sale. It was killed unusually late in tho season, these animals nor mally having "holed in" before this. Awageof$U fora forty-eight-hour week for journeymen com positors wns tho award announc ed last week by the arbitration board hearing the case of the Portland commercial printing houses and members of the allied printing trades. The previous wage of these workmenjins been $36 for a lorty-eight-hour week. The demnnd made was for $42 for a forty-two-hour week. Tho case has been pending for nearly two months. Tho controversy arose about the middlo of Aug ust and was finally referred to an arbitration board in Septem ber. Eighteen hearings wero held. Apprentices of various gradcB received varying raises. The city of Portland nnd the dock commission, being unable to come to any understanding with the Portland Railway, Light & Power company relative to the proposed extension of the street railway from its present terminus in St. Johns to tho municipal terminal, the public service commission is requested to set a date for hearing argu ments in the case. Application for the extension was made by tho city of Portland on the ground thnt tho snmo was nec ccssnry to the convenience of dock employes living in St. Johns. Tha railroad company opposed tho extension on the grounds that tho oxpense would bo justified by tho returns. At tho hearing in th matter three weeks ago an adjournment was taken, with tho understanding that tho applicants and tho P. R. L. & P. company would got to gether on n solution of tho con troversy. N. Morris, longtimo Port land resident, who passed away at tho homo of her daughter, Mrs. W. J. Quigloy, in Yakima, Wash., on November 8. Mrs. MorriB, who had boon suffering from a stroke of paralysis for some time, had gono to Yakima in tho liopo of bettering her health. Weimer. of 303 East Hurlington, street, who has charge of tha work of the Women's Athletic club, of St. Johns is one of tho instructors cmnlovcd by the nark department of the City of Portland. Miss Weimcr is in the second year physical educational course at Reed college and lives at the col lege dormitory. Last year she won the silver loving cup for having the most individual points in athletic work.
