It is reported that Mr. Mark wart is contemplating erecting a business building on the corner of Jersey and New York streets n a short while. Prof. C. II. Boyd has purchas ed two lots on the corner of Bu chanan and Jersey streets thru the agency of McKinney & Da vis, and he may decide to build a residence thereon. The Empire Investment Co. tias the foundations built tor three neat residences in East St. Johns, and it is said the compa ny will build more houses after the three are completed. The new house belonging to J. . McKinney on the corner of ierco and Edison streets is rap idly nearing completion. Yates and Ford, who have acquired a splendid reputation as first class workmen, have charge of con struction. Rev. G. W. Eliot of the Port- and Unitarian church and Ed ward Adams Cantrell of Califor nia will discuss "The Limita tions of Socialism" at 227 Yam- lill street, 'Portland. Sunday next at 3 p. m. The discussion will be free to all. Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Larson of deer. Minn., were guests of r. and Mrs. F. W. Valentine Tuesday. While J.N. Keeler of St. Johns was attending a superintendent and teachers' meeting last Mon day evening at the homo of Mr. and Mrs. M. B. Green. (502 Sen eca street, forty-five of tho mem bers and friends met at the church and marched in a body to the homo .of Mrs. Green, where y previous arrangement they were met at tho door by Mr. Ceeler, being a complete surprise on him. After a general good time they were served with the excellent refreshments the la dies of tho church are noted for. Evangelical Church: K. L. Jennings property on lartman street, which was par tially destroyed by fire some months ago. Mr, McKinney has had tho residence restored to its former usefulness, and it is now as attractive and substantial as before the fire. He has also mado an exchange of property where by he became possessor of a house and lot on South Ivanhoe street, between Burr and Bu chanan, and also a house and lot near Dawson street and North ern Hill. Mr. McKinney sold a lot at Whitwood Court last week to Mrs. Mary Monday of Salem. The W.C.T.U. meeting at the city hall next Monday will be very interesting and helpful. After the business session the meeting will be in the form of a Bible study and consecration ser vice, conducted by our Evangel istic superintendent, Mrs, T. J. Monahan. This meeting had been planned for nextmonth.but we felt the need of it just now. If each one should come with a Bible text that is most helpful to them just at this time, beside the good things that our leader brings to us. 1 am sure it will be a good afternoon for us. We are sadly in need of Bible read ing and prayer in these days, and we hope to help and be help ed at this meeting. We expect o have a good attendance. Reporter. Miss DeGrafT, president of the Portland Grade Teachers' Asso ciaton, addressed the St. Johns teachers in the library audito rium Wednesday evening, and a committee was appointed to draft a constitution for an asso ciation of the local teachers. J.E.Kirk, a former realty man and well known citizen of St. Johns, dropped in from Wash ington state tho first of the week and greeted his old time friends and acquaintances. He is looking fine. The Royal Arcanums held a most interesting meeting in Bickner Hall Wednesday even ing. Grand lodge officials wero present and mado interesting addresses. The Order ia steadi ly growing in numbers and in terest manifested. A magazino under tho auspices of tho St. Clement church, wo understand, will be published in few days. Fry and Miss Eliz abeth B. Books wero united in marriage last Thursday evening at 9:30 in the St. James Luther an church, Portland, Rev. J. A. Leas performing the ceremony. The bride arrived from York, Pennsylvania, at about seven o'clock in the evening and the ceremony was performed two hours and a half later. It was a great surprise to the Professor's friends, who had no intimation of the happy event. The groom is principal of the high school, and is a most popular young man with all classes. The bride is ono ot tho Keystone state's most charming and accomplished young ladies. After March 20th they will be home to their friends at 721 N. Hayes street. Admission 25c and 15c Better Service First Editor Review: I noticed in your issuo of Fobruary 27th an article telling us what a wonder ful institution a bridge structuro across the Willamette, connect ing St. Johns with Whitwood Court, would be- -one end rest ing on the foothills of tho west sido and tho other upon somo suitable location on our side of tho river. Well, I think it would bo all right, but I presume that gentlemen from Whitwood do not need to go to Portland for a living every day. If ho does, ho has a much better car servico than we over on tho east side. My opinion is to work hard for a through car service to and from Portland. I am also very much in favor of a bridge if tho Hill line will extend their line across tho bridge into our city, there fore a better car servico first.
