A Georgia Judga lino decided that a baso ball fan may swear when tho homo toam loses. Certainly tho provocation Is enough to cause swear words, If thcro Is any cnuso for pro fanity at nny tlnio or at any place, Out of 2,500 boys rocontly exam Inod In tho schools of Kansas, only six clgnrotto smokers wcro found to bo what would generally bo called "bright". Ton of tlio remainder woro nvorago students, while all tho rest of tho 2iOU wero found to bo poor at their studies, or worthless. Why not havo a roso show In 8t Johns? Tho flowers aro hero to bo found In great profusion and no finer nro found anywhero on earth. Such nn exhibition could bo gotton up with but little oxponBo and would bo great ndvertlHomcnt for tho city. Inoxponolvo prizes might bo offered In order to arouso keener competl tlon, A couple of days might bo do voted to this cause to advantage. Any ono finding a pockotbook on tho strcotii containing n goodly sum of nionoy, and whon tho address of the owner Is on a card on tho In side, If not at onco roturnod to tho ov-nor In no bettor than nn ordinary thief, and Iho act Is ho regarded by lav Hovoro punishment may bo meted out to ono who Is guilty of iiucli nn act If proof can bo ostnb llshed, In enso where tho ownor Is unknown, according to law, It must bo advertised before It Is safe to 1-ccp It. Tho dlvorco proceedings between Howard liould and his wife which havo Interested tho public for tho past week or so, gives nn Insight Into some of tho troubles of the mil lionaire. If thero wero 11 few more women llku Mrs. Gould In tho world there would bo a decruaso In tho number of millionaires, As a spendoi sho U certainly hard to excel. 81m did not bellevo In wearing tho snmo Kowu twice and didn't cam how much THE BE8T 18 ALWAYS SERVED While soma of our citizens havo been discussing In a public manner what meat markots to patronlzo and tho whys and wherefores, thero Is ono market whero no doubt exists ns to whether you should deal thero or not. No question has over been raised ns to tho quality of tho moats they sell nor tho prlco they chargo for tho same. Neither has their good citizenship, their Interest In tho welfare of tho city nor their Ban nro business methods over been doubted. They havo novcr boon hauled up beforo a raaglstrato for soiling tainted mcntB, nor do thoy expect to. Tho market In question Is tho old rollablo ono conducted by Hltgood & Cole, who havo been pur suing tho ovon tonor of their way, attending strictly to business, giving tho public oxcoptlonal values for their money, nnd not being harassed by tho advent of any other markot within tho city limits, Thoy wish to tli n nk tholr many patrons for con tinning to stay with thorn while bucIi stronous cffortB aro being mado draw their trade nway, nnd tho con fldonca thus placod In thin markot will novcr bo violated. Tho quality of tho moat wlltnovorbo lowered and tho prices wilt over bo maintained at tho lowcBt posslblo notch. If you nro not nlrcndy n patron of this market a trial will convince you that you always got your money's worth. ST. JOHNS NOT SO BAD to Flro crackers of all kinds at Frank Clark's 0 Kd Htocktou'a now house at Whit wood Court Is rapidly nearlng com plotlon, Tho dwelling will bo modern In all respects nnd tho location Is certainly a sightly ono. 0 Mrs, u, II, Chlpman had a vory flno display of roses In tho window of tho St. Johns Ilnrdwaro store last week. Thoy wero very boautl ful aud attracted a great deal of at tention. o N. J. llalley will soon begin tho erection of a now residence nt Wh It- wood which will bo occuplod, whon completed, by his son Wllllum Ilnlley nnd family. Whltwood Is af fording qulto an attraction as n real' donee site 011 nccount of Its bonutlful scenery, pure air and unsurpassed spring water. o There Is a lot of good hay going to wasto on tho various vacant lots around tho city, 'Tin a wonder that sotno of our citizens owning cown on't gut up enough ambition to got after It, ns Is most casoa It would bo freely given nnd tho owners would bo glad to havo It cut down and removed. Johns Station Prion Richmond 601 To the People of St Johns We have come among you because you have asked us to do so. Smith never goes anywhere he is not wanted. Your very best people have asked us to come and start one of Smith's "clean" markets and give them Smith's fresh Oregon meat weighed on correct scales. Mind you, we weigh our meats hon estly. The Beef Trust has, in many instances, labeled its meats quite cheap, but when you took the meat home and weighed it on your own scales you would quickly see you were cheated. Yes. Smith was arrested for selling tainted meat. The case was put to a jury in Judge O'Day's Court and those twelve jurymen pronounced him guiltless in a four minute deliberation. The.judge said it was a shocking thing to bring up such a charge. The jurymen said that any day we wanted to get up a petition to put Mrs. Sarah A. Evans, Portland's market inspector, out of office they would head the list. But here's another story, as Kipling says. Down in Cuba there are thousands and thousands of graves of young men who enlisted in their prime of life in the American army. These men were poisoned-murdered-by the very same Beef Trust that was supplying St. Johns with meat before Smith came. In tho past month the Bf Trust has brought to Oregon from Cali fornia countless tons of ice-car meats. I should be awfully afraid that meat was well tainted by the time It reached St. Johns. There Is only one way Just one of getting pure, fresh Oregon meats trade with Smith. FRANK L. SMITH MEAT CO. "Fighting the Beef Trust" alio imlil for thorn.
