To the People of St Johns
We have come among you because you have
asked us to do so. Smith never goes anywhere he is
not wanted. Your very best people have asked us to
come and start one of Smith's "clean" markets and
give them Smith's fresh Oregon meat weighed on
correct scales. Mind you, we weigh our meats hon
estly. The Beef Trust has, in many instances, labeled its
meats quite cheap, but when you took the meat home and
weighed it on your own scales you would quickly see you
were cheated.
Yes. Smith was arrested for selling tainted meat. The
case was put to a jury in Judge O'Day's Court and those twelve
jurymen pronounced him guiltless in a four minute deliberation.
The.judge said it was a shocking thing to bring up such a charge.
The jurymen said that any day we wanted to get up a petition to
put Mrs. Sarah A. Evans, Portland's market inspector, out of
office they would head the list.
But here's another story, as Kipling says. Down in Cuba
there are thousands and thousands of graves of young men who
enlisted in their prime of life in the American army. These men
were poisoned-murdered-by the very same Beef Trust that was
supplying St. Johns with meat before Smith came.
In tho past month the Bf Trust has brought to Oregon from Cali
fornia countless tons of ice-car meats. I should be awfully afraid that
meat was well tainted by the time It reached St. Johns. There Is only one
way Just one of getting pure, fresh Oregon meats trade with Smith.
