Some of them are the most beautiful specimens of the iris family that blooms. Some blos soms arc 10 to 12 inches across. Rev. I. S. Leonard, pastor of the 1st Baptist church, Pullman, Wash., will preach next Sunday morning nud evening at the Baptist church. He has been called "the eloquent boy preacher." Hear him. Mrs. Kemp, department chaplain of the W. R. C., left Tuesday for Newport to attend the convention held there this week. She will have the best report that has been made by the department in Oregon. Mrs. P. T. Hansen, delegate from H. B. Compsou corps accompanied her. It is a matter of interest that S. A. D. Meek, who was elected to the legislature from Washington county on the republican anti- statement No. i ticket recently, is a son of Joe Meek, the man who called for a division nt Champocg, that won Oregon to the United States. Remember the auction sale at Prnll's today nnd tomorrow. There was one thing noticeable at the graduating exercises Monday evening and that was the good be havior of the audience. It was most orderly and quiet and the majority of the guests were the young people of the city. It speaks well for St. Johns, and it was re marked by Professor Curtis that he had never seen a more orderly, well-behaved audience on an occa sion of this kind. J. R. Todd, an old friend of George Hall, the whisker expert, was iu the city last Thursday and made this office n short call. Mr. Todd is a commercial pilgrim trav eling iu the interests of Stciucii Supply Co., of Los Angeles, Cal., dealers iu barber supplies nnd makes this city scmi-occnsionnlly,, or n little oftencr. He had not been here for about three years and says he sees n wonderful improve ment iu the city. Remember the auction sale nt Prall's today and tomorrow. Big Benefit Ball. Now remem ber the three big B's. This is a benefit for the fire boys and this is the time to show your appreciation of the department. The boys nre always quick to turn out nt the alarm of fire. They arc Johnnie on the spot. If you do not dance, buy a half dozen tickets any way to help the boys out. If there is ever a fire at your place, you will get your money back many Units through their efforts. The presidents, past presidents, and treasurers of the 25 lodges of the Fraternal Brotherhood have formed themselves into an organ ization to be known as the Oregon State association of the Fraternal Brotherhood. The objects of the association nre the advancement of the Order and also the drawing together of the officers in a social way. The association will give a big picnic at Cauemah Park July 4 and a little later will hold a state convention and banquet at Portland. The olucers of the association are George P. Doherty of Portland 209, president; Ed L. Stockton, St. Johns lodge, secre tary and Mrs. J. C. Murray of Portland 209, treasurer.. On Saturday June 20 friends of Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Roberts were. invited in to spend the day iu honor of Mr. Roberts fifty-first year in Oregon and Mrs. Roberts' birthday. Dinner was served at two o clock. Covers were laid for eighteen. Mr. aud Mrs. Roberts' daughters, Mrs. W. C. Elliott and Mrs. J. S. Stau ley received, and Mrs, A. J. Freum, and Mrs. W. J. Ward assisted by Mrs. Ashby served in the diuiug room. During the afternoon ice cream and cake was served by Vada Ward and Vera Biddle. In the fifty-one years spent iu Oregon Mr. Roberts has seen Portland grow from a forest to a great city, and it is with pride he refers to St. Johns as his home for the greater part of that time. Early Sunday morning there was a frightful wreck at the Cazadero power plant of the Portland Rail way, Light and Power compauy. One of the big water wheels rnu- mug one of the generators rau away because the governor regu lating the flow of water on the wheel refused to work aud the water gate was permitted to open wide. The generator ran so fast that it flew to pieces. A hunk of casting struck the governor of the other big wheel breaking it and the other gate flew open and that generator also followed the first. The total damage is estimated at $100,000. There was no loss of life, but the two operators there had a narrow escape from the flying metal. The building shows a great pile of castings and twisted wire as though the plant .had been torn to pieces by some ' great ex plosion. Bring in your printing now. Remember the auction sale nt Prnll's today and tomorrow. Mrs. Sarah Kemp nnd daughter will leave next week for Moffett Springs, Washington, to visit Mrs. Kemp's son, L. J. Kemp. Miss Nellie Kemp entertained Misses Alice and Susie Galloway nnd Misses Lillian and Ruby Hyde of Portland at dinner on the 15th. Rose Temple, Pythian Sisters had the best report presented at their grand lodge Inst week. There had been n greater number initiated during the nine mouths of their existence than any other temple had initiated during the entire year. Another feather iu the lints of our St. Johns Sisters. They re turned home Monday evening nud the doctor is just like the rest. He says things did not look good to him here when his wife was away and he thought if he could find something better up where she was he would stay, but one week was enough for him. He says that the nearer he came to St. Johns the better it looked to him aud he thinks there is nbthlug bct- anywhere. He's right. Remember the auction sale at Prall's today and tomorrow. F. B.
