Hditor Review: Never was it more true than at the present time, that "Kternal vigilance is the price of liberty. The almost uni vcrsal demand for religious legisla tion shows that people arc forget ting the grand and glorious prin ciples taucht in Judea by the author of liberty himself; and cm bodied in the constitution of this government; and which have made it one of the best, if not indeed the very best government in the world's history. I refer to the principles of liberty and equal rights. Lib- erty includes freedom of action, with a recognition of the equal rights of others. Majorities have no right to laws granting to them selves privileges which are denied the minority: for the principle of equality is thereby violated, and In case unless this principle is rccogu there ts no protection from tvrannv of the maiontv in case i. rtinnu. m f.vnrrii it. His gosK-l was and is: "Whosoever will may come;" and "Choose ye this day whom ye will serve." He sets before man the results of his choice but leaves him free to exer cise it. One of the arguments made in favor of Sunday laws is that thev nre "for the irood of the 1 . . - ... laborimr man:" but to compel a nmn to refrain from labor or amuse- mLiit.4 "for his irood." is to take UWay his right of private judgment n ,nattcr thnt pertains solely to h,s ow K00ti, Of course the labor- lur ,,, i1Ils come to be unite a "pet lamb" especially when he is I wanted to "blent" thromrh his bab 0t nt the polls. QUr couucilmcu are certainly to be commended for the stand they took regarding the recent proposed Sunday ord nance. Councils ore ,,0t created to decide religious con- troversies. I say religious cou trovers es. because t ie nuest on as I t0 whether Sunday is the Sabbath 0r not Is at lenst a controverted one. wtu the entire weight of scripture argument in favor of a different day. That Sunday laws are ndvo- M,,.,l u-eniise of the stmnosed re- Ulmoiis character of the dav and fro, b other reason is too plain to need contradiction. In the re cent agitation here for an ordinance prohibiting skating rinks, billiard iinrlor.H and nool rooms from oner- !. .1 . . nt ntr on Sunday, the dea was Ljiven that it was because of the noise made bv the rink in the vieinitv of some of the churches that disturbed worship. If thai wns the reason why not have asked that the ordinance nlso nrohibit tlte . - ---- . . - 1 rink oicratiuK on Thursday night when prayer meeting is held? If it iu,d even been in the interests of the vounir neonle's morals, reason would demand that these nlaces of n nuestionable character be closed toiet lien and not s mn v 011 Sun- ,jay, thus tacitly admitting that it is jK-rlectly right for them to oper- atc on a oti,er jays of the week. There is another tiliase of the nuestion nnd thnt is that worshln. plug congregations are already pro- ected by law from real disturbance 0u all days alike. The fact is that the whole fabric 0f religious legislation is built upon .1,,. intolerant nrincmle of MI want M0 therefore you must. I would not in the least immien the motives of those who are advo cating Sunday laws. Some of the best people of our country are working in the cause: they see that reforms are needed, and perhaps their time has been so fully taken up with other matters that they have only looked on one side of this question. To them I would say: " on cannot make people re- ligious by civil law; you can make hypocrites by compelling them to outwardly observe the forms of religion; but true religion ts a mat- ter of the heart and conscience;! and an individual is amenable to uoti only, aim not tne civil powers, for his religious belief." People need rest every day and it would be amount of rest each day as a cer- tain amount each week. Respect- fully, J. M. Meiklejohu.
