The evening topic will be "My Master", or "Whom do I acrver All arc in vited. Chester P. Gates, pastor. The Portland Gas company, it is snid has offered to furnish b. V Davidor with gas for his gas tank in St. Johns at 50 cents per 1000. Mr. Davidor refused the offer nnd declared he would comply with the terms of his franchise to the letter nnd would take up no side issues. W. II. Pcugh, an old friend of the Byerlees from Hood River, was visiting his father in Portland this week and took occasion to run out for a look at St. Johns. Mr. Pcugh is an extensive farmer in Sherman and Gilliam counties, has several big ranches in that country, but has his residence in Hood Kivcr. Mr. and Mrs. Pascal Hill have been enjoying a pretty rocky time the past two mouths, rascal went through a siege of the grip, rheu matism and "general cusseilncss," and about the time he began to get his reel under the tabic Mrs. Hill was taken ill and has been confined to her bed nearly all the time for the past, six weeks. She was able to be up for the first tunc buuuay. Mrs. A. V. Vincent was hostess at a very pleasant party on Thurs day cveniug of last week. The guests were: Mrs. lf. I'Jclclicr, Misses Clara Bcller. The Portland library has pre sented the free library at St. Johns with a handsome picture of an old English castle that makes a very fine addition to the ornamentation of the walls. A room on the ground floor would be much better for thn library than these upstairs rooms. The Portland library fur nishes everything else, our people ought to be able to furnish a room on the ground floor. Mrs. Julia M. Parker who went recently to visit her brother, Cap tain McAlpine living at Edmonds, Wash., near beattle, returned tins week accompanied by another brother, A. W. McAlpine of Ho mer, Saskatchowan, B. C. There was a reunion of the family at Capt. McAlpine 's where members of the family met who had not seen each other since 1868, almost 40 years. The whisker experts, Mansfield & Kaemlein, are fitting up the room formerly occupied by D. C. Rogers as a real estate office and are moving in there with their hir sute sanitarium. It will be lone some when these sporty kids move out aud we don't know how we will be able to handle Brother Downey after they go, but he is so anxtous to become annexed 10 Portland that he may forget all about us, Frederick Decker and wife of Inkster, Grand Forks county, North Dakota, was in the city this week visiting their old friend, Mrs. Geo. M. Hall. Mr. Decker says he is greatly pleased with the out look at St. Johns and after he fin ishes his trip down the coast ex pects to return home, get together a bunch ot ins people mere and come to St. Johns to locate perma nently. Here is the glad hand to them and we trust the "bunch" will be a large one. The mystery is solved. It is known now why it was so neces sary for the genial football sport and all round good fellow, Harry C. Hunter, secretary of the Port land Manufacturing company, to make so many sudden trips to the coast. Last Sunday Mr. Hunter and Miss Julia Larson of Marsh field, were married at the home of the groom s brother, Dr. K. r, Hunter, Hoquiam, Wash. They are now at home to their friends at .11.1 North Hayes. Best wishes of their many friends are with them for a long and most happy wedded life. Alex McNiven has the mutnp's in regulation style, but at last reports is recovering. Mr. aud Mrs. W. J. Steele of Sutter, Wash., have been spending the holidays with Mrs. Steele's sis ter, Mrs. D. G. Busby. Harlle Blackwcll of Willamette university, and his sister, Miss Helen of Oregon City, visited their aunt, Mrs. Sarah Kemp, during the week. Bricc and family returned this week from a week's visit with H. V. Edwards, formerly of St. Johns, now near Cottrell. They report a most enjoyable visit. The W. C. T. U. mothers' meet Intr which was to have been held last Monday has been postponed until Monday, January otn, at Airs. Tollman's, corner of Charleston and Hayes. H. N. Quarley of Potlatch, Ida ho, is visiting his sister, Mrs. J. T. Peterson. Potlatch is perhaps the largest mill town in the country, employing thousands of mill men, and there is not a saloon within three miles of there. The contractors, Mason & Urban hove completed their work 011 the new concrete block building on Jersey street, and it is a credit to these hustlers. These gentlemen do all kinds of concrete work, such as cement walks, basement work, cement floors, etc. A. Uugcr, the cigar man, has tonKcd the ciirar stand formerly oc cupied by Brother Goodcll and has placed 0 fine line ot cigars and tobacco therein. Brother Uugcr is one of the finest fellows iu the city and we will be very glad to have him for a near neighbor. The Knights of Pythias held 0 very fraternal session at their hall last Friday night. There was no work and. the evening was spent for the most part in the "Good of the Order." Just before the close Brother W. C. Aldersou preferred charges against Brother E. B. Hoi comb, retiring secretary, accusing mm ot missing mil a single meeting since he was elected to the office, of continually looking after the sick and distressed brothers aud their families, and last but not least, that in all the years our brother had lived iu St. Johns he had received but one Christmas present. To all of these several charges the delinquent plead guilty. Brother Aldersou then usurped tlie authority of the grand mogul aud pronounced sentence upon Brother Holcomb to be that he should wear out the overcoat which he then placed upon him. Brother Hol comb was completely taken by sur prise and failed to make his usually ready speech. Red Aten Reorganize The smouldering embers of the council fire of Kiwarda Tribe No. 43 of the I. O. R. M. of the hunt ing grounds of St. Johns were re kindled at M. W. A. hall on the sleep of the 30th sun of the Hunt ing moon (Dec. 30U1; uy deputy Great Sachem Junius O'Connor of Portland, with a membership of 22 and a goodly sum of wampum in the wampum belt. Past Great Sachems Geo. M. Orton and Dr. S. Lewis King of the Great Council of Oregon, to gether with a number of the mem bers of the three Portland tribes, came out from the city and exemp lified the beautiful ceremonial work of the order on a number of pale face candidates. The following chiefs were elected and raised to their respective stumps (installed): Geo. E. Epps, sachem; Harry G. Purday, senior sagamore; W. C. McFarland. junior; G. L. Perrine, prophet; J. Earl Kilkenny, chief of records; Henry K. Knigut, Keeper of the wampum. The next council fire will be kindled Wednesday, January 8th, at 8 p. m. A hunch of the Pythian Sisters met iu their hall Tuesday night, gave n short program, ployed games and enjoyed themselves iu various ways until the old year shook hands with the new aud stepped out into the past. Then they were joined by n lot ol hungry knights who assisted them greatly iu disposing of a large number of the most delicious cakes that ever tempted an epicure. There were all kinds and styles of cukes and we were so fortunate ns to receive an invitation to n place between two of the prettiest sisters who never allowed our plate to become empty.
