A lare oil tank on the bank of the river near Portsmouth belong ing to the Union Oil Co. exploded with terrific force about 12 o'clock last Saturday niuht. The force of the explosion led many in the im mediate vicinity to believe it was an earthquake. The cause of the explosion is un known. The watchman is missing and his death has been established. An oil steamer had tied up at the dock and was making preparations to discharge its cargo. Leonard Jacqiie, the watchman, went to the top of a large lank, and lifting the cover ftoin the manhole, attempted to descend into the tank with a lighted lantern. An explosion fol owed that carried the iron roof of the tank half a mile away. The flames spread rapidly, and the entire plant, consisting of five tanks and the pumping house, to tnuJt mated at $.)o,ooo. l'he fire boat l elide. ed valuable service, but was badly scotched. Several explosions occurred and there were numerous narrow es eajes of the firemen and spectators. About 100 feel of the O. K. & N. Itestle was destroyed.
