We left the camp am warm spring this morning ni o'clock. We travelled about 30 mi k-s today over It full hills am through deep valleys, but there plenty of name here and good water and a kind of a mountain ttitnlp. They ate about as large as hen's eggs and are tender am good eating; also there Is currants and mountain cherries. We were overtaken today by two men and souaw from the fort. 1 1 ley are going to the mountains with us Two of our men left us at the forts but their place Is filled by these men. and a squaw thrown in. W saw a good number of buffaloes P day, but have not killed any them. We encamped In i valley There is plenty of good water here and excellent grass for the cattle mid horses ami unites. The grass is eiiual to timothy grass, if not better. It is of different kinds i the valley. It resembles blue grass of tin States. Killed live uiffaloe cows today and two bulls. The river is about 200 yards wide here. July 1, 18.11 This day we crossed the north fork of the Platte river about a mile from where we eueatuicd last evening. We hail some difficulty in crossing as the ord was deep and the water ran very switt. W e got over sate, all excepting two teams one drowned, a mule, ami the other turned over the wagon, but did not lose much. We encaniivd on the north side of the river this night, atout two miles from where we stayed last night. July 2d. Left the camp early this morning and traveled on the banks of the river. Killed 2 buff aloes. 'The country is sandy here and broken 011 tin- south side of ; the river. Then- is a range of high hills or mountains covered with pins ttccs, but 011 the notth side there is barren sand hills and plains. Wc cnc.imcd on the bank of the river this i wiling July jd. One of the men b the name of llelder lost his horse yesterday evening when he was hitting btiffaloe. He hitched bis hore ntid could not find the place again. Himself and another man went back this morn ing. but the horse was gone. They fount! the place where the horse was hitched, but 110 horse. July 4th. Started this morning at six o'clock The day is warm ami the road ruff. We traveled about 15 miles ami eiicauiK:d nt tin excellent spring of water. We are about a day's travel from a .stream called Sweetwater. The country here Is hilly, abounding in sand hills and sand rtKksand mountains. There is plenty of buffaloes and grizly bears nud wolves. Killed 3 buffaloes today July 5th. This morning we left the camp nt the usual hour, and nfli-r n Imril ilnv s tlrive came to a creek called Sweetwater. There we eucntiied for the night. Killed some buffaloes today, and seen n gootl number of them. A band had liken to have run over some of the waggons, but we shot some of them tint! the others fled. Our encampment this night is near a rock called the itidecii(Ient Iinlcjendencc rock. It is a rock about 130 feet high of soltitl granite. July 6tli. We left the Indepen dent rock this morning nt the usual hour of starting, now in n valley that will We are lead us over the mountains, rsotlitng Impelled today worthy of notice excepting we seen some curiosity in the rocks along each side of the creek. There are mountains of granite rocks. Tlie creek runs through a gap in a sol lid rock which Is not less than 250 feet high on each side and about 50 feet wide at the narrowest place. It is nearly ereiidiciilar on one side ami on the other it is slielvey shelving over. We cncainjicd this evening on the banks of the Sweetwater creek which extends the whole length of this valley.
