"OPPORTUNITY Is waititiK with n dub hi the Great North West!" declared I-'ra Klburttt Iltihlmrd, the noted Philistine, in his lecture in Portland. That sayinj; is a true one ant t)eo)le ate coniincncinn to realize it They are awakening to the possibilities that have been lying latent for centuries and within a scene of years this northwest section will be a wonderfully productive country. Theie its no doubt of this itjis asserted by those who came here from other portions of Anieri ca: it is acknowledged by those who have dwelt heie for .some time. Hut Oppoitnnity will not clul everyone and theie are some who will dodge at the slightest feint that Mrs. Opportunity makes. This i an age of grumblers and of high livers: and the coming generation endeavoring tolive too fast to con suuie too much of the extravagancies of the times: theie aie vast iitiniberK essaying to keep up a patent-leathe career on a uiocctisin income. This is one class that Dame Op tmi Utility will not club into a conset vative life. And another class is coinw)M.l oniiose'who aie kimck eis, ilixlioneht scheineis aiitl soie heads. If tlioxe could be "kuocket sensible", it would ben blessing for themselves anil for the public geiifially. If all will work together for the advancement of this state theie will Ih? a gleam of sunshine even when taiucloiitls abound: and the success ami gieutiiess' ofhegon will Ih? as slued. A few days later theie was tccoived fiom Mr. McAllon vwlio had, iu some iiiauuei, gotten hold of a copy of the iwtie) a coiupliiiieutaty lettei regatdiug the matter. The lettei said: "I)it.K UitvlHw: 1 find time now to thank you for baby show notice and the toetty which was clever. It gt.s into my special scrapbook whete I put at tides 1 ptie vety natch. Thanking you again I tetuaiii Miiccicly yout.s, Dan McAi.i.hn." Mr. McAllen ts a gentleman, a scholar ami a gotvl judge of- kthius. DO IT NOW. lb you have an extra dollar or two buy lots iu St. Johns. Thete is no Hvciible show of losing out ln-cause evury piece of laud is ImiuihI to increse in value. Do it now I A JUST R UP USA I,. IN spite of the frenzied petitions of several enthusiastic women the Presbytery of Southern Oregon has refused to endorse equal suffrage ; and the clergy of that denomination acted wisely. The agitation of a complete system of woman suffrage is no credit to any one -and the states now harrassed by the fad would quickly remove the privilege should a vote be again held on the question in fact the women them selves would vote nway their right of franchise were it left to them. Kqtial suffrage has never yet proved equal suffrage in any stale and, except a woman be the lone head of n household and a taxpayer she should defy all efforts to push her forth into the dirty deal of jol itics. As a rule she has about the same conception of politics as n blind mule has of the rainbow's hues and is apparently as fully In terested. Her place is in the home, the church, the ball room, the the ater j it is not iu the swirl ami nau seating vortex of politics. It is declared that women, once given the right of franchise, "will purify politics I" As well declare that n pint of cologne wottltl change the odor of a slaughter tien I Or assert that a bouquet of roses tossetl to a drove of hogs would produce spiced ham I To a man politics is a delusion ami a snare but to a woman it's a mighty sight worse. The ordinary woman after one dose of It has had enough and much Hrsuasiou must In: used to get her again to the polls. The head of any household by right should be entitled to a vote ; but to discriminate would create 11 com (ilex condition. Kqtial suffrage means the serving upon juries, the paying of M)1I taxes, military serv ice, and all the many drawbacks to which men are subject. These things she must face or curb her desire for etpial siilfrage. No ixditictil (Kitty can afford to lake up the fad and but few chiltches will be thoughtlessly in veigled into it. . Till? PRANCIIISK. IN another column is to be found the oitliiiauce as ptoHisetl for a fetty franchise. It is a long one ami is vety explicit iu all details .mil should be lead by every citien iu tinier to have every feature well hi mind. The city council is tloing its best It) sufeguatil the city iu older that St. Johhs may xv.ess every availa ble chance for piogtcs. The pro- Misct oidiuaiicc piomises to be an excellent thing for the city iu many ways and out ciliens will, it is believed, have no cause to tegietils adoption. It will he puhliohcd again next week and, after it shall have MMcd its thiitl leading and been adopted, it will have to Ih? again piinted with the ptoHM' date ami signature. I luting the interim woik will be piogiessiug upon the .ippiiMchcs to the dock ami the link itnt-lf as well as upon limit to be 1iM.1l teuiMkratily. WOULD lll TAMIL Kiiu.aVH . r llie.es 11 a 1 etes to cut out the humility of the fool- Uill game. The moment the btutality is lulled that moment it cettMti to awaken public interest. As well etase ftoin the pi og rain the name of "Juliet" and allow Romeo to prate to an empty balcony ami eek applause as to force the great football teams of America to Ih gentlemen! Koutevell is usually MKvesnful in what he iccotumcuds but he'll have to throw out sig nals of distress ott this latest. RATHHR COSTLY. JAPAN, now the war has closed finds that she is badly lit debt. She owes, so she declates, i,?5o.- ixvi.iw) no small sum. At live H?r cent her iutetest amounts to ft tS fot every minute of each .vj touts of the day. The worst of it ill is the fact that Japan will have to pay it. HARMONY OR HOMINY. YHSTURDAY state republicans met in Pott land to .see if things were coming tight. Whether or not the common herd were allowed to min gle with the elect is not yet known. 11 fact, there is yet a question us to whether it was harmony or hominy Mrs. R. C. Couch is now guest of Mr. and Mrs. K. C. Couch.' She comes from Guthrie Center. invu ami is sister-in-law of Mr. ' Couch. Next Monday evening will lie the! regular meeting of the city council. 1 it is hgutcd that much important work is to Ik? transacted. I Some More Stuff One week from next Sunday will be rally day for the livangelicul Sunday school. Wouldn't it be fine if a few more brick blocks could be erected inside the "fire limits?" There are many prosjecttvc dwellers constantly looking over St. Johns with a view of investing. Several new houses in the block at the rear of the schoolhotise help fill a vacuum that has long been noticed. Try the "Par Kxcellence" : the champion sc cigar: made in St. Johns. W. A.
