W ith th is sm all am ount of m oney, th ey realized th a t th e ir beginning w ould have to be a m odest one, and th a t th eir choice of a b u si ness m ust necessarily be one in w hich no g reat outlay of initial ex p en d itu re w as required. A fter giving th e m a tte r some careful thought, and a fte r surveying all th e possibilities w hich fell w ith in the spere of th e ir lim ited fund, th ey finally decided to open a sm all d ry cleaning agency. A pproaching a large d ry cle a n ing establishm ent w ith th e ir idea, th ey so favorably im pressed th e organiation w ith th e ir honest d e term ination th a t th ey w ere giv en a m onth’s course of in stru c tion i nthe m echanics of th e b u si ness and fu rth e r assistance in finding space for th e ir operations. Today, six m onths a fte r th e ir d e cision, th ey em ploy tw o girls, have expanded th e ir o p eratin g space and are doing a n et p ro fit business of over $600 per m onth. T h ere is no sta n d ard p a tte rn by w hich com m u nities can be guided in assum ing th is responsibility. N eeds v ary w ith localities and th e problem s p resen ted by these needs m u st be faced w ith e n tire ly different, a p proaches. It is u n th in k a b le th at Negro org an iatio n s ev ery w h ere will not step forth to assum e th eir respective d u ties in th is urg en t m atter. O ne of th e m ost baffling en ig m as to con fro n t USES these days is w h at to do w ith th e v eteran s w ho rose to becom e officers of th e line, b u t who, because of th e ir youth, had practically no job ex p erien ce before en terin g th e services. One solution being w idely discussed in W ashington is to provide th ese m en w ith a specialized tra in in g pro g ram to equip th e m for ad m in istrativ e positions in civ il service. M any of these m en, finding th e ir lack of civilian tra in in g and e x p e ri ence a handicap, have prom ptly e n tered school. In th e m eantim e, “a job for ev ery v e te ra n ” is a goal com p letely tie d u p w ith th e full em ploym ent program . T h at is w hy m ore and m ore groups in terested in v e te ra n s’ w elfare are pressing congress to m ake full reco n v er sion th e n u m b e r one item on its agenda.
