PAGE A8, KEIZERTIMES, SEPTEMBER 4, 2020 Palm Springs brings familar, SKPS bringing back yet unique storyline to Hulu grab and go meal sites By TJ Reid For the Keizertimes One of my guilty pleasures in this life is a little comedic rap group that goes by the name of The Lonely Island. Raun- chy, foul-mouthed, immature, and exceptionally hilarious and clever, the group fi rst made it big when they all got jobs at Saturday Night Live: Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer as writers and Andy Samberg as a featured player. After pioneer- ing SNL Digital Shorts and essentially inventing the viral YouTube video, the group tried its hand at feature fi lm making to a lesser degree of success; while still funny, the two fi lms that they wrote, directed, and starred in, 2007’s Hot Rod and 2016’s Popstar: Never Stop Nev- er Stopping, were hardly what one could consider box offi ce or critical hits. I’m still a fan of both, however, and was there- fore excited to learn that they had produced another fi lm called Palm Springs. While it was a bit less of a straightfor- ward comedy and much more romcom than I was expecting, I found this Sundance hit to be a charmingly good time if not a wholly original one. Have you seen Ground- hog Day? Of course you’ve seen Groundhog Day; it’s a classic. Palm Springs has a plot much like that of Groundhog Day, but the kicker is that there is more than one person stuck in the time loop in this story. Although the movie does get some mileage from this simple tweak to the living-one-day- over-and-over-again premise, Submitted Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti star in Palm Springs, now streaming on Hulu. there is no denying that a lot of the themes are almost iden- tical to the those in the 1993 Bill Murray classic. The quest to fi nd meaning in a world free of long-term consequences, the indifference towards life one develops when one becomes essentially immortal, trying to get things right and become a better person… it’s all there. But Palm Springs truly sets itself apart with its love story. As I said earlier, this is a full- on rom-com instead of being another exercise in full-on silli- ness and absurdity. The leads, Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti, have just as many dra- matic and romantic scenes as they do funny scenes, and they are both more than up to the task (surprisingly so for Sam- berg… I didn’t know the guy could act in addition to being funny). This is, undoubtedly, a result of the fact that the guys in The Lonely Island only pro- duced this fi lm instead of writ- ing and directing in it as well (with the exception of Sam- berg, obviously). The characters they play are not always likeable and their romance occasionally seems a little one-sided, once skewed towards Sarah (Mili- oti) and then skewed towards Nyles (Samberg), but the two still have great chemistry that kept me invested. All in all, the premise might not be original, but what screenwriter Andy Siara and director Max Bar- bakow did with the premise was impressive. I should also mention one other big dif- ference between this fi lm and its inspiration: While Ground- hog’s Day is a family friendly PG, Palm Springs is an R-rat- ed affair that you should not watch with kids. It thoroughly earns its R rating with swear- ing, some sexual content, and hard drug use. Also, Andy Sam- berg gets shot by J.K. Simmons with a bow and arrow a couple of times, but we’ll let that slide. Palm Springs is now available on Hulu. Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8, Salem-Keizer Public Schools (SKPS) will switch from the summer meal program to the regular national school lunch and breakfast programs. Most school sites will have grab and go meals available for pick up each weekday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A full list of meal distri- bution sites can be found on the district website. At this time, only students enrolled in Salem-Keizer Pub- lic Schools, including students in district operated pre-school, migrant programs and other programs such as the EDGE online program, are eligible to receive meals at SKPS grab and go sites after Sept. 4. For the 2020-21 school year, SKPS has been able to designate nearly all schools as Commu- nity Eligible Provision (CEP) schools. This means students at all schools except for Straub Middle School and Candalaria Elementary School will receive their school meals at no cost, meaning there is no charge for families and families in CEP schools do not need to apply for free and reduced meals. Only families attending Straub and Candalaria will need to apply for free or reduced meal benefi ts to receive free meals at school grab and go sites. Many families will be able to qualify for free meals at school through the new Oregon Expanded In- come Guidelines. Just like during a typical school year, families experienc- ing homelessness, students in foster care, students receiving migrant services, and families that receive SNAP or TANF benefi ts will automatically be eligible to receive free meals at Straub and Candalaria. Elks host fundraiser golf tourney Submitted The Keizer Elks Lodge held its annual golf tournament on Sunday, Aug. 30, at McNary Golf Course. There were 92 members and guests who participated with lunch, prizes and awards afterwards. There were 24 sponsors of which fi ve were Gold Sponsors from local businesses. The Gold Sponsors were: Thrivent Financial, Columbia Bank, R. Bauer Insurance, HomeSmart Real Estate and Keizer Vision Source. The proceeds are to benefi t the Oregon Elks Children’s Eye Clinic and McNary High School underfunded athletics, performing arts, JrROTC and the bowling team. public notices PUBLISHED SUMMONS IN THE CIRCUIT COURT OF THE STATE OF OREGON FOR MARION COUNTY Juvenile Department Case No. 20JU01947 PUBLISHED SUMMONS In the Matter of JUSTIN LEE SMART, A Child.
