DECEMBER 20, 2019, KEIZERTIMES, PAGE A7 The Irishman: A long, worthy journey GRASSROOTS GOVERNMENT By JORDAN REID For the Keizertimes “Nowadays, young people, they don’t know who Jimmy Hoffa was. They don’t have a clue. I mean, they know that he disappeared or something, but that’s about it. But back then, there wasn’t nobody who didn’t know who Jimmy Hoffa was.” Even as someone who re- ceived his bachelor’s degree in history, I must admit that Rob- ert De Niro’s character, the titular Irishman Frank Sheer- an, has a point. I vaguely re- call learning about Hoffa (here played by the always mesmer- izing Al Pacino) in Mr. Litch- fi eld’s infamous AP U.S. His- tory course, but really… how important of a historical fi gure can he be if he’s not men- tioned in Billy Joel’s We Didn’t Start the Fire? Turns out he was very important, as Hoffa’s life and schemes, as well as Martin Scorsese’s resultant fi lm, cast a focused light on a time when organized crime and politics went hand-in-hand and gang- sters had infl uence over every- thing from the election of pres- idents to foreign policy. De Niro’s Frank Sheeran, a working man turned mob hitman turned labor union offi cial is the true core of the fi lm, however. And what can I say about De Niro that hasn’t been said before? The man can act. Every single person in this cast can act. What else should one expect when one of the most acclaimed directors of our time gets such names as Rob- ert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci (in his fi rst role since his unoffi cial retirement from the fi lm business) to act out what can only be described as a passion project? I was particular- ly impressed with Ray Romano as Bill Bufalino, for no other reason than my previous belief that he exclusively did come- dies. Saying that De Niro didn’t really stand out in this cast is the best possi- ble compliment I can give to the overall prowess dis- Submitted played by these fi ne actors. The Keizer Parks Advisory Committee met Tuesday, Dec. 10. Here is what was discussed: • A subgroup of the committee members reported on efforts to revise the memorial policy in the city’s parks. The goal is to more clearly delineate the responsibilities of those making memorial contributions and what the responsibili- ties of the city will be moving forward. • Keizer Parks Supervisor Robert Johnson said the in- creased presence of the area’s homeless residents in parks is having a noticeable impact on staff time. Cleaning up after encampments are urged to move on requires taking extra precautions in many cases. • Matt Lawyer, a member of the board, followed up on a request by fellow board member Wayne Frey to install semi-permanent goal posts at Country Glen Park. Frey made a pitch for a matching grant in November that was denied due to concerns over usage. Lawyer launched a Facebook poll in the area around the park which seemed to indicate there is support for such facilities, but that many did not know that less resilient goals had been installed in the park. The previous goals deteriorated quickly and didn’t see as much use as Frey hoped for. • Frey reported on the results of a bike rack inventory in Keizer parks. Ten of 19 parks have bike racks of varying ca- pacity. Frey suggested putting Sunset Park in west Keizer at the top of the list when the city begins looking at installing additional racks. Johnson said the city is planning to install a donated bike rack at Meadows Park in the near future. A bike rack that was taken out at The Big Toy in Keizer Rapids Park will also be put back once some additional renovations are complete. The next meeting of the committee is Tuesday, Jan. 14.
