Starting pitcher Gregory Santos settled down after a three-run Emerald fi rst in- ning by holding the visitors scoreless for the next fi ve in- nings. The big offensive inning for Salem-Keizer was the seven-run fourth with two doubles, a walk, a hit batsman, an error, and a passed ball. In the top of the fi rst, Fer- nando Kelli singled to right fi eld and stole second base. Kwang-Min Kwon singled to left and reached second on a throw by left fi elder Chris- topher Burks. A passed ball by Ricardo Genoves allowed Kelli to score, and a single to left by Luis Diaz drove in Kwon. Diaz reached second on a sacrifi ce bunt by Jonathan Sierra, and a single to left center by Christopher Morel drove Diaz in. The Volcanoes got one run in the fi rst. Kyle McPherson singled to right, went to sec- ond on an errant pickoff at- tempt by Emerald starter Eury Ramos, and scored as Trevor Abrams doubled down the right fi eld line. After Santos struck out the side in the second, the Volca- noes loaded the bases in their half of the inning but failed to cross the plate. Salem-Keizer added a run in the third. Abrams led off with a single to center and went to second on a single to center by Genoves. Dalton Combs doubled down the right fi eld line and scored Genoves. With two out, Eugenio Palma replaced Ramos on the mound and struck out Jose Layer. McPherson walked on a three-and-two count to lead off the bottom of the fourth. Wander Franco reached fi rst on a force attempt and a throwing error by third base- man Morel. Abrams scored both run- ners with a double to center. Robinson Medrano drove in Abrams with a single to left. Genoves walked, and Combs was hit by a pitch. Nico Giarratano scored Medrano with a Texas League single to right. A passed ball brought Genoves home and moved Combs and Giarratano up. Layer doubled to right, driv- ing in Combs and Giarratano. Casey Ryan came in to pitch and retired the next two batters, ending the in- ning. In the top of the seventh, Zach Becherer relieved San- tos and retired the Emeralds in order, all on fl y balls. Eugene added two runs in the eighth with Sidney Du- prey on the mound. With one out, Luis Vazquez reached fi rst base on an errant throw by sec- ond baseman McPherson and then second as the throw went into the dugout. Me- drano singled to right and reached second on Combs’ single to left. A wild pitch by Stephen Ridings moved both runners up, and Christopher Burks scored Medrano with a single to center. The win gave the Volca- noes an 8-4 record. Thursday, June 21: Volcanoes 4, Boise 3 Salem-Keizer survived a three-run eighth-inning rally to guarantee a series win over host Boise. Jose Layer led off the third inning with a double and scored when a throwing error by catcher Greg Jones gave him an extra base on Kyle McPherson’s sacrifi ce bunt. In the Volcano sixth, a walk, an error, and a hit batsman loaded the bases. Christopher Burks drove Robinson home by grounding out, Nico Giar- rantano singled Wander Fran- co home, went to second base on the throw, and scored on a single by Layer. Friday, June 22: Volcanoes 7, Boise 1 Hits from everyone in the starting lineup and strong pitching by Norwith Gudino and two relievers gave the puzzle2answers Volcanoes a sweep of the three-game series in Boise. Mikey Edie, Diego Rinco- nes, and Franco had two hits each out of Salem-Keizer’s 12. Genoves and Combs drove in two runs each, and Medrano scored twice. The Volcano left fi elder drove in fi ve runs as he hit a home run, two doubles, and a single. The hits gave him a .529 batting average for the young season. After the Hops scored the fi rst run of the game in the fi rst inning and went ahead by a run in the second, Rincones drove in two of the Volcanoes’ third inning runs with his second homer of the season. Sunday, June 24: Hillsboro 12, Volcanoes 2 The Hops made good use of their 14 hits and scattered the Volcanoes’ 11 to even the series.
