PAGE A12, KEIZERTIMES, DECEMBER 15, 2017 McNary swimmers dominate McKay By DEREK WILEY Of the Keizertimes McNary’s toughest compe- tition in the pool came against itself as the Celtics easily de- feated McKay in its second swim meet of the season. Competing at the Kroc Center on Thursday, Dec. 7, the McNary boys outscored the Royal Scots 123-23 while the girls won 101-54. With more depth on the boys team, McNary coach Casey Lewin mixed up his re- lays. In the 200-yard medley relay, Brock Wyer, Harrison Vaughn, Jackson McCarty and Wyatt Sherwood were able to edge Kyle Hooper, Grant Biondi, Jabez Rhoades and Jack O’Connor by a little more than half a second. The 200 free relay was also tight with Wyer, O’Connor, Rhoades and Vaughn defeat- ing McCarty, Biondi, Hooper and Sherwood by two sec- onds. “I was impressed with our boys, both our A and our B relays,” Lewin said. “We were much more competi- tive amongst ourselves than I thought, which I like to see. It will keep them more motivat- ed during practice, knowing there is someone right at their heels. It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out at the end of the year because we have 7-8 guys that are gun- ning for those four spots.” The Celtics also won the 400 free relay as Brennan Whalen, Collin Wentworth, Josiah Metz and Bryce Junker touched the wall in 4:28.51. The Lady Celts swept the relays as well. Kylie Mc- Carty, Emma Garland, Kylee Daulton and Alyssa Garvey won the 400 free relay by un- der a second in 4:28.81. Alex Beard, Bella Beard, Emily Al- ger and Haley Debban took fi rst in the 200 medley relay in 2:02.93. Alex Beard, Alger, Garvey and Garland won the 200 free relay in 1:55.21. Bella Beard won the 500 free in 5:49.08 and the 100 butterfl y in 1:17.79. Alex Beard took fi rst in the 200 IM in 2:26.97. Alger touched the wall fi rst in the 100 free, fi n- ishing in 1:04.11. Biondi edged Hooper by a little more than a second in the boys 100 fl y, fi nishing in 1:06.18. Biondi also won the 500 free in 5:57.65. Hooper took fi rst in the 200 IM in 2:16.61. Vaughn won the 50 free in 24.04 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.60. O’Connor took fi rst in the 100 backstroke in 1:25.34. Wyer won the 200 free in 2:16.79. “We’re starting to a look a little more in swimming shape,” Lewin said. “We defi - nitely improved a lot from Forest Grove. I’m really excit- ed. This group everyday gets a little bit better, which is nice to see.” SWEEP, continued from Page 11 He’s defending and rebound- ing. We’re working on his touch at the rim and Ricky gives us another shooting presence out- side. It worked out well.” Garvey fi nished with 18 points, two rebounds and three steals. Andrew Jones added two points, six assists, three rebounds and two steals. The Celtics got nine points from their bench, led by Griffi n Oliveira, who fi nished with six. “We’re still working on some rotations and who can play different spots and when,” Kirch said. “We have a lot of new guys that play varsity and we’re still trying to teach. You saw a lot of breakdowns in our zone. We’ve just got to practice more. I was pleased with our offense and our ability to move the ball and make them guard. If we’re get- ting to the free throw line early and we’re swinging the ball and attacking down hill, that was our point of emphasis and that is what we did.” DUAL, continued from Page 11 high. That’s why he’s able to make the assist rather than a turnover. He’s really just slowed his mind down but his body is still playing. The points are great but his rebounding, his as- sist, he’s just doing a great job.” Struggling to rebound and defend, Kirch changed his ro- tation with 6’5 senior Ricardo Gardelli and 6’6 junior Boston Smith getting the start. Smith fi nished with fi ve re- bounds to go with four points, two blocks and two steals. Gardelli had just one rebound but added 10 points. “We wanted to go with our best jumpers and our big- gest guys,” Kirch said. “They’re (West Albany) a pretty athletic team. Rebounding is the reason we lost up at Oregon City. We gave up so many boards so we wanted our best rebounders in there. Boston is getting there. good opening for him. “They (McMinnville) were completely new on the lightweights. We were com- pletely new on the light- weights so it was good to see us win those matches. I told them before the dual, when it comes to new guys wres- tling new guys or young guys wrestling young guys, this dual is going to be won right there and they did a good job.” McNary junior Enrique Vincent took care of business KEIZERTIMES/Derek Wiley McNary senior Grant Biondi won the 100-yard butterfl y in 1:06.18 on Thursday, Dec. 7 at the Kroc Center. Biondi also took fi rst in the 500 freestyle in 5:57.65. at 132 pounds, pinning his opponent in 33 seconds. But with two close wins at 132 and 138, McMinnville began to cut into the Celtics lead and a pin at 160 got the Grizzlies within 34-27 with two matches to go. However, McNary senior Brayden Ebbs (170) was able to stop the momentum, pin- ning his opponent in the fi rst period to secure the team win for the Celtics. “We lost this dual last year so this is a good mark for us,” coach Ebbs said. “Apples to apples, we’re a notch ahead right now and now our job is to continue to develop. We haven’t even coached a lot of moves yet. We’ve narrowed it down to a few specifi c concepts and we’re just trying to focus on the things that are working well for them, which is their intensity.” McNary fi nished fourth in a six-team tournament in Silverton on Saturday, Dec. 9. Norton and Noah Grun- berg both fi nished 4-1.
