SEPTEMBER 30, 2016, KEIZERTIMES, PAGE A11 Whiteaker continues winning streak Claggett falls to Judson The Whiteaker Middle School varsity football team moved to 2-0 Thursday, Sept. 22 with a 14-0 win over Leslie WMS was led by quarter- back Rian Canini’s 10 of 15 passing for 172 yards and a touchdown. Slot receiver Cameron Parks had six catches for 122 yards and Ian Martin led all rushers with 10 carries for 88 yards and a touchdown. On its opening possession, Leslie moved the ball effec- tively before a Griffi n Hub- bard sack—his fi rst of his three on the night—forced a Leslie punt near midfi eld, and the booming punt rolled dead on the Whiteaker 2-yard line. It took the Wolverines just seven plays to go 98 yards for the score, with Canini con- necting with Nate Meithof from 24 yards out to put WMS up 6-0. Head Coach Tom Larimer was quick to credit Leslie coach Kevin Scharer with good halftime adjustments to limit the the WMS offense in the second half. Larimer added his offen- sive line was vastly improved over week one. “Our starting O-line (Noah Cervantes, Hubbard, Eric Sorenson, Coleman Young, Matt Mehlhoff and TE Brady Jackson) lacks ex- perience, but Coach (Zach- ary) Drake and Coach (An- gel) Ochoa are doing a great job with them,” he said. “I think we have a chance to be real good up front before too long.” Offensive Coordina- tor Marcus Larimer claimed similar improvement in the Whiteaker passing game. “Canini, Parks and Meithof all had really good games, and they will only get better over time in our system,” he said. The defense was led by Hubbard and Young, who combined for eight tackles for loss. “Those two are relentless,” said Ochoa. “They are my max effort guys up front.” Tom Larimer also praised linebackers Cy Schmaltz, Ben Roth, and Isaac Evarts for their strong play, as well as de- fensive linemen Hunter Zim- merman and Justin Liene- mann. “Many of our kids are re- ally undersized and many are Award-Winning Authentic American BBQ Now 2 Locations 1210 State Street 503-362-2194 2505 Liberty St NE 503-689-1082 crossword new to the game but they are doing a great job for us so far,” he said.
