Not when he ran right up the middle of the Scots kick- off team for a 90-yard touch- down. Not when he caught a short pass from Josiah Gilbert, made a defender miss and used his 100-meter track speed to score an 81-yard touchdown to give McNary a narrow lead at halftime. And certainly not when Van Voorhis beat a corner- back and safety help to grab another ball from Gilbert and raced to the end zone for a 76-yard touchdown to fi nish off McKay 46-41 on home- coming night. “That’s one of the better games we’ve had around here, that’s for sure,” McNary head coach Jeff Auvinen said of Van Voorhis’ performance. Gilbert went up to Van Voorhis before the game, played on Friday, Sept. 23, and told him he would score four touchdowns. But Van Voorhis decided to do him one better, fi nishing with fi ve scores and more than 400 yards in the shootout. “That kind of put a number in my head to try and get and (Gilbert) put the ball where it needed to be for me to score,” Van Voorhis said. “We were fi red up about this game. We came out here and played like we were fi red up. We wanted to win real bad.” McNary made it a point to get the ball in Van Voor- his’ hands. Along with eight catches for 275 yards, he also had 44 yards on six rushing at- tempts. “I knew (Van Voorhis) was just going to take over and he did,” Gilbert said. “It’s phe- nomenal.” The Celtics needed all fi ve of Van Voorhis’ touchdowns. McKay quarterback Noah Tavera passed for 350 yards and three scores. The Scots did most of their damage on fade routes with McKay receivers out-jumping McNary defenders for the ball. “They were very accurate and went and got it and we didn’t play the ball very well,” Auvinen said. “We’ll keep working on it.” McKay also scored 14 points on defense, twice re- turning interceptions for touchdowns. McNary defensive back Lucas Garvey twice intercept- ed Tavera, including once in the end zone at the end of the fi rst half to set up Van Voorhis’ 81-yard go-ahead score. The Scots got on the score- board fi rst. After converting a fourth- and-6 at the Celtic 41-yard line with a 36-yard comple- tion by Tavera, Matthew Jard- ing reached the end zone on a 5-yard run with 7:57 remain- ing in the fi rst quarter. McNary marched down the fi eld as well but its open- ing drive stalled at McKay’s 5-yard line when Josh Benson was tackled behind the line of scrimmage on fourth-and- goal. Garvey’s fi rst interception gave the ball right back to the Celtics and Gilbert found Van Voorhis for a 40-yard touch- down. On the fi rst play of the second quarter, the two con- nected again for a 46-yard score but McNary twice failed to convert two-point attempts and led 12-7. McKay answered with 14 straight points on a Tav- era touchdown pass and then a pick-6 to go ahead 21-12 with seven minutes remaining in the fi rst half. But Van Voorhis returned the following kickoff for a touchdown to get the Celtics within 21-19. The sophomore goalkeeper saved a free kick in the fi nal 10 seconds as the Celtics tied Forest Grove 0-0 at home on Tuesday, Sept. 27. “It felt great, just a rush of energy goes through and then when you hear them counting down, it’s a big relief,” Lopez said. “It’s good, especially at the beginning of the season because it gets your confi - dence up for the rest of the way.” Senior captain Gustavo Vil- lalvazo was the fi rst to con- gratulate Lopez, then head coach Miguel Camarena. “That’s what we want, for him to be the leader in the back,” Camarena said. “Our defense was solid. They didn’t have a lot of penetration, just long balls and fouls but noth- ing through. Championship teams don’t allow goals.” After scoring just three goals in its previous four games, Camarena moved Vil- lalvazo from the back to for- ward. He put a shot on goal in the fi rst fi ve minutes and an- other one over the post in the 10th minute. Villalvazo fi red another shot off the post early in the second half and a free kick over the goal in the 56th min- ute. “We create opportunities but we can’t put one in the net,” Camarena said. “He’s (Villalvazo) got a leg. That kid can strike a ball anytime. He had some chances and we’ll continue to do that.” KEIZERTIMES/Derek Wiley McNary sophomore Sebastian Lopez makes a save late in the Celtics match with Forest Grove on Tuesday, Sept. 27. By DEREK WILEY Of the Keizertimes Someone had to start with West Salem. On Thursday, Sept. 22, it was McNary, as the Lady Celts lost 4-1 to open Greater Valley Conference play. “This is generally the fa- vorite in our conference,” McNary head coach A.J. Nash said. “They’ve got a great team. They’ve got a really talented midfi eld. My goal tonight was to compete until the end and the whole game I feel like we competed but they put a few more goals in than I was hop- ing. I think we can clean that stuff up though.” West Salem capitalized on a Lady Celts mistake in the box to take a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute. But McNary kept battling the defending conference champs and trailed by just one goal at halftime. After nearly tying the game in the fi rst 10 minutes of the second half, freshman Ju- lie Dieker fi nished a goal in the 53rd minute to even the match 1-1. The equalizer started in the midfi eld with a ball played up the left side for Jessy Shore who then drove a ball through the box just ahead of three at- tacking Celts. Abigail Hawley then passed the ball back across the box to Dieker, who put it in the back of the net. “It was a clinical fi nish that I haven’t seen much of yet and I was proud of them,” Nash said. West Salem quickly an- swered when a Titan forward dribbled past two McNary defenders and scored in the lower corner of the goal. “This is a team (West Sa- lem) that has been deep in the playoffs and sometimes a goal fuels them,” Nash said. “Most of their wins this season have been come from behind against really good teams.” The Titans scored a third goal in transition in the 65th minute and added a fourth from thirty yards out into the upper corner of the goal late in the contest. “Our goal is to make play- offs and we need fi ve results in conference to assure that,” Nash said. “We knew this was going to be one of the tough- est people we faced so now we need fi ve results out of seven games. I still feel good about the season and great with how they played. I’m proud of them.”
