Artist wants to carve city hall poles By CRAIG MURPHY Of the Keizertimes Perhaps you’ve noticed the two tall trees in front of the Keizer Civic Center. A couple of years ago they got limbed, with the idea of two “story poles” being put in their place in 2017. The trees are a vi- sual reference for what the proj- ect will look like when done. As envisioned by mem- bers of the Keizer Public Arts Commission, one pole would be done by a Native American tribe, with the other pole done by a non-tribal group. Lore Christopher wants the trees left up, in hopes of an artist being intrigued. Thus, Christopher was danc- ing – literally – at the most re- cent KPAC meeting when she heard an update from Nate Brown, director of Community Development for Keizer. “We were contacted by a chainsaw artist,” Brown said of artist David Hillesland. “This is not someone willing to just do- nate his work. He saw the two poles and he said it was perfect. They would be carved in place.” It was at this point Christo- pher got up and danced. “Are you kidding me?” Christopher asked. “He will do the two in place? Excuse me? How much crap have I taken for saying we should leave the poles up? Maybe the tribal con- tribution is they do the design work and he does it with his chainsaw. I’m so excited.” Brown acknowledged Chris- topher has taken some grief for her stance, since it’s been agreed the tree poles aren’t healthy enough to stay up much longer. “However, you’re missing a major point,” Brown said. “He is not donating them. They will cost between $1,000 and $10,000 each.” Christopher and Brown both emphasized plans are in the preliminary stages. “We’re not making an an- nouncement,” Brown said. “There are a lot of details to work through. There are fund- ing sources to identify. There is a lot of mileage still to go.” Christopher noted the work will be done next year. “This gives us another al- ternative,” she said. “We were talking about having to spend $25,000. We just didn’t know if we would have anyone come forward. It’s exciting to know we have artists interested.” Rick Day cautioned the poles won’t last forever. “You will lose them under the ground eventually,” Day said. “I’m suggesting you will have to protect the heck out of them. They will eventually rot out below.” Brown acknowledged the poles won’t last forever. “If we protect the top, the bottom is pretty rot resistant,” he said. “They will eventually have to be preserved in anoth- er way, but that is many years down the road.” Christopher once again re- peated her point. “We wouldn’t have this in front of us if we didn’t have these poles out front,” she said. “This gentleman drove by. Car- ousel Carvers said they might be interested. The Grand Ronde tribe said they might be inter- ested as well. Everyone loves the project.” Brown emphasized again this week plans are preliminary. “There’s no design, no spe- cifi cs, just a private individual who wants us to commission him,” Brown said.
