FEBRUARY 12, 2016, KEIZERTIMES, PAGE A7 WHITES, continued from Page A1 KEIZERTIMES fi le/Craig Murphy The Blind Date sculpture will soon be moving to focal point at the corner of River and Chemawa Roads, where the fountain is among the attractions. MOVE, continued from Page A1 other potential sites before making their decision at the Jan. 26 meeting. Focal point was eliminated as one of the possible sites due to how many other things are at the location, especially in the summer when signs for events at Keizer Rapids Park are put up. Space in front of Shari's, right across River Road, was also considered. Brown pushed for focal point. “Focal point, I think, could use some public art,” Brown said. Christopher initially had her reservations and was leaning towards the space in front of Shari's. “I don't think it's a bad spot,” she said. “My problem with Keizer Corner is the fl ags and the fountain are right there.” Brown argued something was missing, however. “But we don't have any public art there,” he said. “We do have the fountain, true. But there's nothing like public art there. The other corner has the (land deed) monument already.” Brown said the new owners of Schoolhouse Square, located across Chemawa from the focal point, will be making some changes. “They are planning to reconstruct and put a building on the corner,” Brown said. “Their desire is to move Starbucks, but we don't know yet.” Permits have been applied to tear down the existing building with fi ve businesses next to Nancy's Burgers and put up a new drive-through Starbucks there. Christopher eventually came around to Brown's idea and made the motion to approve. At the council meeting on Feb. 1, Brown explained where Blind Date would go. “The area for signs is close to the water feature,” he said. “This is separated, to the south. There's a standalone little planter area. It would allow the display of a smaller piece easily, which is good for this piece. A new artist has done an American fl ag (Ol' Glory) made of scrap material. It stands alone better and is a better fi t for Copper Creek.” son Corey works there as well. His father, mother and mother- in-law help out as well. Scott also thanked his wife of 25 years, Shannon. “It's just really special,” Scott said afterwards. “We work hard in the community, in a family-run business. We give a lot back to the community, but it's cool to get back a lot from the community. We started it together, have done a lot of hard work together, a lot of tears and sweat. It's grown tremendously over the last fi ve years. It's been a huge success. My dad is a big support. My mother-in-law serves tables on our two busiest days, Tuesdays and Thursdays. So many customers come in and recognize it's a family-run business.” Early on, Scott came up with an Outstanding Card, which teachers can give to students doing good work at school to earn a free sandwich. “It feels good all the way around,” Scott said of the card. “The teacher feels good to give it to the kid, the kid feels good to be able to bring it in and the parents usually bring the kid in. My hope is one day to open my own kitchen and expand K's Catering. That is my life goal, along with Big Town Hero. Big Town Hero is my second family.” Kalynn said the whole family was excited for dad's award. “It's nice to know all of our hard work is paying off,” she said. “We couldn't have done it without the community support.” KHC proclamation Mayor Cathy Clark proclaimed 2016 the Keizer Heritage Year at a coun- cil meeting in January. Clark made the declaration in honor of the centennial of the old Keizer School. The old school is now home to the Keizer Heritage Museum, the Keizer Community Library, the Keizer Art Association and the Enid Joy Mount Gallery. The Keizer Heritage Foundation, which owns and operates the 100-year-old building, is planning three events to celebrate. There will be an entry in the Iris Parade in May; on Aug. 18, a Back to School night for students when the school was located at the corner of River and Chemawa Roads. In November a school reunion will be held.
