Four sites will operate in the Salem-Keizer area, plus weekend sites in Silverton and Stayton. Federal and Oregon tax returns will be done at all sites. Walk-in services, with no appointments, will be avail- able at Baxter Hill Commu- nity Hall, 1780 Baxter Hill Road SE; Dayspring Fellow- ship Church, 1755 Lockhaven Drive NE, Keizer; and on Sat- urdays at the Silverton Senior Center, 115 Westfi eld Street, Silverton and the Stayton Public Library, 515 N. First Street in Stayton. Services by appointment only will be available at Cen- ter 50 Plus, 2615 Portland Road NE and at the South Salem Senior Center, 6450 Fairway Avenue SE. The 10-week schedule be- gins Monday, Feb. 1 and will operate through April 15. The Keizer Dayspring Fel- lowship walk-in site will be open on Mondays and Thurs- days from 1 to 7 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Taxpayers also may walk in to Baxter Hill Commu- nity Hall, on Mondays and Tuesdays from 1 to 7 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Scheduled appointments are available at Center 50 Plus on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and at the South Salem ‘Awesome’ essays worth $529 for local students Students from kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to tell the Salem-Keizer Edu- cation Foundation why college is awesome. The Oregon Col- lege Savings Plan will award winning entries $529 for col- lege. Two awards per grade level will be announced at the 34th annual Awesome 3000 on May 7. Guidelines are available online at www.skeducation- foundation.org. Students are encouraged to paint mental pictures with essays that are in- teresting and creative. All essays submitted by students must be original. Grades K-5 can be hand-written and may include a drawing. Essays by students in grades 6-12 must be typed in 12 point font and double- spaced. Essays will be judged by grade categories. Entrants are not required to register for the Awesome 3000. The dead- line for all submissions is 5 p.m. on Friday, April 1. “Helping kids achieve their goals and become better pre- pared educationally is some- thing the Oregon College Sav- ings Plan cares deeply about,” said Michael Parker, executive director of the Oregon 529 College Savings Network. “Every child deserves a chance at a college education, and sup- porting creativity and strong writing skills is a big step in the right direction.” Senior Center on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Appointments at Center 50 Plus may be requested by calling 503-588-6303 on Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon. Service will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest free tax consulting and preparation service. All volun- teers in the program are certi- fi ed and trained by the AARP Foundation in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service and the Oregon De- partment of Revenue. Night of Jazz Feb. 13 The McNary High School band is hosting its only fun- draising concert of the year, A Night of Jazz, Saturday, Feb. 13. The evening includes a silent auction, dancing and desserts at McNary Golf Club, 165 McNary Estates Drive N. In addition to perfor- mances by McNary’s stu- dents, Justin Woodward and Foe Destroyer will be giving a special performance. WMS aims to be kind Whiteaker Middle School students spent the past week trying to foster kindness around the school and in all its students. The Great Kindness Challenge, a weeklong campaign to promote simple acts of kindness, is a opportunity to turn the messages of anti-bullying on their head. Instead of trying to create buy-in for a negative goal, anti-bullying, the pro- gram is designed to help students ex- perience kindness in all its forms fi rst- hand. Howald New exhibit at Keizer Heritage The Keizer Heritage is hosting a new Native Ameri- can display in the museum, which runs through early March, featuring handcarved ceremonial pipes, baskets and various toys. This display is on loan and is a personal collection of Jim and Pat LaRock. Viewing hours are Tuesday and Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
