The eo>t of living in Stayton is ex tremely low compared to that of east ern towns. One big saving here is the matter of fuel. Slab-wood can I hi se cured at the saw-mill for 25 cents for nil that can he loaded on a wagon. If one wants cheaper wood he can gather drift-wood from the river bank. In the matter of shoes, clothing, groc eries, etc.prices are littleditTernet than in the east. Furniture about tlie same price— hardware a little higher. Stayton has good walks, good streets well lighted by electricity. When completed will have a first class city water system The merchants are wide awake and up to date. RESIDENCE OI E. D. ALEXANDER. For $2.00 one can go on an excur sion to the ocean in summer or for less money can take the cars for pleasure trips into the mountains. From Stay- ton the ever snow-covered Mt. Jef ferson is plainly visible. There are many places near Stayton where na ture may be seen in its grandeur and beauty— from towering crags to beauti ful water-falls. A Stayton housewife’s fruit “ cellar” is always filled with fruits of ln*r own canning — cherries, pears, p r u n ea, peaches, and various kinds of berries. The “ easterner” who thinks lie knows prunes, will find he is mistaken when lie arrives in Stayton and sam ples the Oregon k i n d . Compared with the kind he has been in the habit of eating, they are as sugar to saw-dust. Stayton has a population of about S00, and is constantly growing. The population lias more than doubled in the past five years. As the popula tion increases real estate values will increase. RESIDENCE OK CHAS. STKEKK, Stayton is not on a railroad at pres ent, but the right-of-way is secured for an electric line from Stayton to Salem and work on the road will be gin this year. The town is a mile and a half from the C. <fc E. railroad on thu south and four miles from the South ern Pacific on the west. The electric line from Stayton will connect with the Salem-Portlnnd elec tric line built the past year, and now running A survey for an electric line I ) - also been made from Stayton east to Lyons.
