A P P L E S H IP M E N T S IN C R EA S E Railroads Qivs Out Figurss Showing Oregon’s Bala of Fruits. Portland— More than twice as many apples were shipped out of this state during 1907 than in 1906, according to reports compiled by the railroads. The Southern Pacific and O. R. A N. lines ha ve completed figures showing the cars of apples shipped from every (mint on the allied lines, and the total num ber of cars is a surprise. “ Nearly all these paples were bought f. o. b. at the station nearest the or chards,” said General Freight Agent Miller, of the Harriman lines. “ Thia shows the fruit is in demand, and Eiatern buyers come here in search of H. The prices this season are better than ever before. One station on our lines that never shipped an apple be fore this year seut away 40 cars to the East a short time ago. This indicates how the apple industry la going ahead. I predict it will only be a few years be fore apple growing will be one of the biggest activities of Oregon people.” Can’t Usa Wood. Burns— The forest rangers of tbe Blue mountain foreat reserve have fined several Harney citizens for cutting tim ber in tbe reserve without permits from the foreat guards. The largest fine im posed was on B. A. Dickenson, who operates a sawmill about eight miles from Harney. He was caught taking timber from government land and fined $300 for about 17 treea. The sawmill men have been making thia a practice for years before the reserve was creat ed, and thought it no harm to continue the practice. Last fall waa the first time a foreat guard has been stationed here to give permits for cutting timber for wood and other purposes. There has always been plenty of timber out side the reserve for wood and timber for botlding purpoees until lately, when it waa all eecured by outside peo ple, to be transferred in time to large timber companies. Board Raisas Teachers' Pay. Oregon City— The teachers of tbe city schools will receive a substantial increase in salaries next year. This was assured at the annual meeting of the local district, at whifeh a special tax of 3)4 mills was levied. The levy is 1 milli n excees of the recommenda tions of the board of directors, and the excees will be added to the salaries of the teachers, making the amount ex pended next year about $10,000, in comparison with $8,000 for the year just closed. The annual report of the directors shows the schools to be in a flourishing condition, and the financial report shows that the floating indebt edness is $909 lees than last year. Clyde 8ayne Acting President. Salem— The executive oommittee of the state normal schools haa elected C. E.
