Considerable is being said in the press about a lig h t­
sh ip off Cape Blanco, and undoubtedly one is needed there,
but is not needed so badly, neither would it serve the tam e
purpose as would a coast guard station at Port Orford.
D uring the thick weather that often accom panies hard
atorjns, a light cannot be seen a great distance. The
C banslor was much uearer the Cape Blanco lig h t when she
struck than she would have been to such a ligh tsh ip and
yet no lig h t was seen. -
A coast guard crew would hot o n ly watch over Blanco
yeef but it could go to the rescue of shipw recked mariners
u p and down tbe coast when bar-harbor crews are helpless.
A lightship is a good thing, but in view o f it tbe necessity
o f a coast guard station should uot be lost Bight of.
