Liberty Bond or Liberty Bound, which will you have it 7 We Ask Four Help IN- f Eliminating Waste! In conjunction with the leading merchants in all parts of the United States, we have joined in the movement Ho obey the government request that no goods be sent out on approval. In doing this we will eliminate the waste of wrapping paper, twine, and valuable time consumed in handling these transactions, both by our clerks and office force. To the individual this saving looks negligible at first thought but if he will take in consideration the number of stores in operation in the United States and the amount of goods that are returned to each of these stores every day, it will readily be seen why the government has asked the merchants and their -customers to co-operate in the elimination of this unnecessary waste. In the future, we will have a fitting room where suits, skirts, waists, corsets, and all other articles of wearing apparel may be tried on before they are purchased. Our salesforce is more than willing to devote any amount of time and attention that it may take to see that each cus tomer is properly fitted or suited before leaving the store. In closing this letter let us say just a word in regard to the cash and credit situation: Owing to theever increasing cost of merchandise, and shorter time allowed us by wholesale houses in which to meet our obligations, we may be forced to do a cash busi ness only, on account of lack of capital. It is our intention to try the credit system for a few weeks longer and we believe that if our customers who are .able to settle their accounts will meet them promptly on the first of every month, we may not be forced to change our present system. Realizing that it is an accommodation to many of our friends to run accounts for a few days, we do not want to go on a strictly cash basis unless forced to do so. STORES VALE. CRANE. COST OF LIVING JUMPS But That Makes No Difference to the Millionaire With a Hobby Old Hitrh Cost of livinc has so Jumped during the past twelve months that mere existence has become a sort fit luxury. Your groceryman tens you no simp ly has to chargo the price asked; the clothier informs you that the same suits he sold for $20, are now $40 and $60 each ,arfd a bargain at that; your milkman strikes you off the list in a hurry if you dare demur to $3.75 per Quart a month: your wife's winter coat will be cloBe to the $60 mark, and her shoes will be a bargain at $i4.bu. As to your winter's wood' pile tho least said the better. Such are the fruits of war, and such are tho burdens to bo borne by tho Peat army of the secondary defense. It's a great life if you don't weak- i. But what would your croceryman -say if you asked him to knock off his profit in these troublesome times? What would nappen u you miorincu vnur Rhoeman. vour milk man. your dry goods man, and the rest of the bunch, that they would have to let you have the goods at a reaucea price i Would these gentlemen politely ac cede to your request 7 They would not. Bankruptcy would follow if they did. . .. You couldn't expect it you would not ask itl These are not the good old days of old. Costs have gone up on everything, and quite naturally, too. In view of the general condition of nffnlm it a ti rather astonishine bit of legislation that Sam Jackson, editor of the Portland Journal would foist on to the statute books this fall. It is as tounding to the persons unacquainted with ttin fnets. but to those who un derstand the motives underlying tho proposed measure, Mr. Jacksons scheme is petty, diabolically dirty, and as malicious as any piece of legisla tion that was ever framed to be "put over" 'on the citizens ot Oregon. You have your home paper, you be lieve in it, and you realize that its in fluence as a community builder is big. Do you know, also, that a man high in affairs oi tne nation nus re cently stated that the First, Second, Third and Fourth Liberty loans would never have been possible without the generous support oi tne press oi ur egon. and of the nation? Do you know, too that not one cent of adver- ticinr wnn nnnrnnriflted bv thfl SWV- crnment to help the press make the loan a success. . ,. . But to return to Jackson's malicious maaanpn ha nnn soma rnrni" - - torney have decided that the legal ad vertising rate wnicn proviues umi publishers shall not be paid a greater sum tnan live cents per nc, j gether too high to suit his imperial taste. He therefore has prepared an initiative petition and wants the vot ers of Oregon to lower the rate, in accordance with his wishes. This is Millionaire Jackson's way of "getting even" with the press of Ore. gon. He has been unable to dictate to the thinking editors of the state who have steadily refused to be whip- t t 1 1 i n n n.l Ta.Vantl'l pea into line w dujjju single tax and other campaigns waged hv t)m Journal. He has chosen the psychological time to carry out his nefarious plan a time when probab ly ninety per cent of the papers of the state are struggling to keep the wolf from the door, that tney may -carry-on" in their important mission of hnlnlnc Uncle Sam's war activities, ------- -,y-. T 1 and 'a really clever way to cut the throats of the country editors. Bring his advertising rates clown bciow cosi and you can run him out of the field! isn't it n rnmmenaapie worn ior a millionaire publisher to be engaged In 7 Unfortunately for Jackson tho vot ers ore onto his little game. They believe in their own communities thnv folievA In their home papers, and they are generous enough to admit that the newspaper men of the state have a God-given right to live in ure gon, in spite of Editor Jackson's per tonal wishes in the matter.
