John La Course was among the
number of new pupils enrolled.
Roderick Murchinson's friends were
glad to welcome him back to Chemawa
this week. Roderick will re-enter the
band,
Christina Lane returned and resumed
her studies after a good long vacation at
home. Christina's friends were giad to
see her return..
... The" clerical force have been burning
considerable. 'midnight oil lately. Last
Saturday the expiration of office hours
was not reached until 11:45 p. m.
Ludova and Maggie Siftsof arrived at
the school from Unalaska this week.
They made the long trip alone and
arrived at the school without mishap.
In a card to the Chemawa American'
asking for his address to be changed to
Kellar, Washington, Mr. Swaim states
that thev are located in a dav school
about a mile and half from Kellar and
like it very much. .
Among the new . pupils who arrived
lately are-the following: Abe Wheeler
and Joseph McCoy from Grande .Ronde,
Oregon; Annie Keelei from Poison, Mon
tana: Nellie Fayne from Valdez, Alaska,
and Lelia Jackson from Puyaliup.
Thanksgiving next! The office is now
arranging the purchase of turkeys and
cranberries, etc., which go to make us
all thankful about dinner time on this
feast day. it will take 450 pounds of
dressed turkey to supply the needs of
Chemawa's pupils.
The kitchen and dining room people
were glad to see the wagons come the
other dav with an additional steam
roaster, another steam vegetable cooker,
and a new 80-gallon steam cooker. This
completes the kitchen equipment and
makes Chemawa's kitchen equipment
first-class and up-to-date.
Among the old pupils who returned
lately, concerning .whom no mention
has been made in the American, are
Philip and Jerry Ktese, from North
Bend, .-Washington; Frank Dan from
Muckleshoot Reservation, and James
Benjamin, Nez Perce, Idaho. All of
their friends were glad to see these pu
pils return and to know that they had
enjoyed a very pleasant vacation.
The enrollment of the school for the
month of October, 1908, showed a gain of
52 over the same month last year, but
the average attendance was 70 over the
corresponding month of the previous
year. The comparison for-. November
will be yet greater in spite of the fact
that many pupils who desire to come to
Chemawa ar.e delayed in getting here,
due to lack)f transportation funds at
Agencies. '
