THE.. CHEMAWA AMERICAN 5 WEDDING BELLS, In the pregence of the assembled employes, the entire student body and a few invited guests, in Chemawa chapel, Wednesday evening, February 12, 1908, the marriage of Miss Lucy N. Jones and Edwin A, Smith was solemnized. Rev, Mr. Babcook of Salem was the officiating minister, The chapel was beautifully decorated with Oregon grape, ferns and asparagus, and over the center of the stage was suspended a large wedding bell, Ribbon wreaths ran along each side of the center aisle for the entire length, Promptly at the appointed hour Miss Irene Campbell played Mendelssohn's wedding march and the bride and groom, attended lespectively by Miss Elizabeth Leudke as maid of honor and Mr, Harold Blodgett as groomsman, entered the oha pel from opposite sides of the room and marched down the side aisles to the back of the chapel, where they met and marched up the center aisle to the stage, where the minister awaited them and where their responsive pledges to the impressive ring ceremony made them husband and wife, After the ceremony the invited guests and employes repaired to the reception room of the employes' building, where nviny nice presents weregiven the newly wedded couple, There was merriment on every hand and many availed them selves of the honored privilege of kisdng the bride. The '.bride's cake was cut and everybody u wished', and extended congratulations, while quite number saved a portion of the cake to put under their pillow. At a late hour Mr. and Mrs. Smith took the train to Portland to spend a brief honeymoon, They have the best wishes and congratulations of their many friends, the Amerioan included, FINE DEBATE, On Thursday of last week the first event of a series of three debates be tween teams representing the Nonpareil and Excelsior Literary Societies of Che mawa occurred in the chapel, The sub ject for debate was "Resolved, That Im migration Should be Restricted" and the affirmative was handled by the Non pareils while the Excelsiors upheld the negative, Lizzie Frazier, Louise Murray and Eugene Williams represented the. Nonpareils and Fortunato Jayme, Henry Dillstrom and Helen Harnden the Ex celsiors, The subject was exceedingly well handled and proved of interest to all, in fact, it was of great educational value, The teams both made worthy efforts, but in the estimation of the judges the Excelsiors had slightly the better of the argument, A pleasing program of a musical and literary character was given just before the debate, Joseph Teabo acted as chairman and timekeeper, The second debate of the series is to occur next week, Carl Cook is now working on the gar den detail Antoine Francis is getting to bo a very good harness-maker, A number of new boy and gHp came here on Tuegday from Montana, Alex Lee is working in the carpenter shop and likes his work very well, I like Chemawa Indian school pretty well. I think better than any other school.
