6 THE CHEMAWA AMERICAN Societies Nonpareil The Nonpareil Literary Society held its meeting in the usual room Thursday evening. The following program was rendered: Opening address, Bessie Chiloquin; vocal duet, Anita McLaugh lin and Grace Barrett; recitation, Min nie Howard; pen picture, Irene Peone. Subject for debate; Resolved: That foot ball 'should be abolished. Affirmatie, Bessie Chiloquin and Matilda John, Neg ative, Ella Brewer and Lizzie Frazier. The judges decided in favor of the nega tive so football shall be encouraged by us hereafter. Osteite Reel The following program was rendered at the Estelle Reel Literary Society: Song, Alice Chalcraft; pen picture, An nie Souvigner; vocal duet, Emma Shep ard and Jennie Schutzhagen; riddles, Nellie Siiepard; music, Emma Shepard and Jennie Schutzhagen, Debate: Re solved: That we find more pleasure in the country than in the city. Affirmative, Nellie Barrett, Grace Beaver and Emma Cameron; Negative, Luella Ryan, Gussie Cameron, Jennie Schutzhagen. Three new members were taken into the soci ety. Tiie society was glad to have Alice Chalcraft back. Ruth Brewer was a visitor during the evening. Stella Fies ter makes a very efficient president. The Estelle Reels held their meeting in room No. 6. Hiawatha Friday evening the usual meeting was held in room 7. Owing to Secretary A. Lane's absence, A. Garry called the roll. After which twelve new members wrere veiled. Owing to the fact that this was the Club's second meeting, much of the time was spent in straightening up matters in regards to the future of the Club. So the debate was short much to the regret of the speakers. The question being "Re solved that Modern Machinery is detri mental to the working class of people." The Negative side of the question was upheld by Peter Seltice and Albert Garry and the Affirmative Joe Lane and Clar ence Bardwell. Although the debate was short it was interesting, and the negative won. From all appearences, we are going to have a good club. Charles Larsen spoke some encourag ing words after which we were dismissed. Excelsior The Fxcelsior Literary Society met in their usual place and had a very inter esting meeting. A football team was organized for the purpose of playing other society teams. Then the following program was well rendered: Recitation, Henry Oleson; jokes, George J. Williams; vocal solo, Martin Sampson; riddles, Harry Queachpalma. The subject for discussion was, Resolved: That the Plateau section is greater than the West Central States. The disputants upon the Affirmative were Harry Queahpalma, Joe Dillstrom and Ben Wilson while A. Goudy, H. Dillstrom and W. Miller up held the Negative. The subject was op en to the house and several would he on the floor as soon as one speaker would 'take his seat. The fact is that we did not have enough time to say all we wish ed to. The Judges were heard from before all could give their opinion of the subject. The affirmative won. A Band of Mercy for the small girls in Small Girls' Building was organized by Miss Miller last Wednesday evening. About thirty girls joined and after a short program rendered by some of the members th" meet in? closed.
