T hese are in the form of letters w rit ten by Sir G eorge Sim pson, agent of the H u d so n ’s Bay C om pany, while paving official visits to the Pacific C oast. T h ey describe m inutely con« ditions at the m ilitary statio n s and give a th o ro u g h ly good idea of the re sources of the co u n try as they were then know n. “ D oubtless these letters w ere,” as P rofesor S hafer says, “ the cause of the renew ed in terest in the settlem en t of the O regon question and the political destiny of C alifornia..” Copies of these and o th er valuable papers re la tin g to the h isto ry of the N o rth w est were m ade from the o rig inal docum ents preserved in the P ublic R ecord Office in L ondon, by P rofessor S hafer d u rin g his recent trip abroad, and are now on file in the lib rary at the U niversity.
