Light on Oregon Question
P rofessor Joseph Shafer has, in the
cu rren t num ber of the A m erican H is ­
torical R eview , copies of a num ber of
valuable docum ents bearin g on the O r­
egon question of 1841 to 1843.
T hese are in the form of letters w rit­
ten by Sir G eorge Sim pson, agent of
the H u d so n ’s Bay C om pany, while
paving official visits to the Pacific
C oast. T h ey describe m inutely con«
ditions at the m ilitary statio n s and
give a th o ro u g h ly good idea of the re­
sources of the co u n try as they were
then know n.
“ D oubtless these letters w ere,” as
P rofesor S hafer says, “ the cause of the
renew ed in terest in the settlem en t of
the O regon question and the political
destiny of C alifornia..”
Copies of these and o th er valuable
papers re la tin g to the h isto ry of the
N o rth w est were m ade from the o rig ­
inal docum ents preserved in the P ublic
R ecord Office in L ondon, by P rofessor
S hafer d u rin g his recent trip abroad,
and are now on file in the lib rary at
the U niversity.
Debate Bulletin
Proof sh eets of the bulletin to be

show th a t the bulletin will be of in te r­
est and value. A list of the officers
of the league is given at the first of the
volum e, followed by a copy of the con­
stitu tio n . C uts of the cham pionship
team , Lebanon, and its closest rivals,
G ran ts P ass, A storia and Baker C ity,
will illu stra te the pam phlet. P resid en t
M arlatte, of the league, c o n trib u te s
an article on “ D ebate C oaches and
D ebate C red it.” M any new schools
have entered the league this year.
Eutaxians Organize
A business m eeting of the E u ta x ­
ians was held M onday evening, at
which definite arran g em en ts were
m ade for a p arty to be given S atu rd ay
evening for all the girls of the U niver­
sity. At the new h o u r— four o ’clock
M onday— th is society will give its first
reg u lar literary program , which p ro m ­
ises to be a very in terestin g one.
Miss Jennie P erry was called aw ay
from college last week by the sickness
of her m other.
