ON “T H E CO N D U CT O F L IF E .’’ Dr. James Russel, of Columbia Univer sity, Speaks at Assembly on W ednesday. Dr. lam es Russel, Dean of Teachers at C olum bia U n iv ersity , spoke to the stu d en ts at A ssem bly W ednesday, on “ T he C onduct of L ife.” T he address was in the form of a direct appeal to the men and wom en of this institution to take life m ore seriously. Dr. R us sel said, in part : “ O regon has unparalleled o p p o rtu n ities, resources and beauty. No place offers m ore o p p o rtu n ity for usefulness to com ing g en eratio n s. Prodigality be longs to y o uth and if people are w ast ing th eir tim e and chances, the p artic ular branch of tra in in g that higher edu cation is en d eav o rin g to teach them is to correct th is fault. O ne hundred years ago the population was only a few m illion— now it is eighty millions. T he am o u n t th a t a nation can do, de pends upon the pow er of the nation. A few y ears ago the pow er lay in the “ Men are needed who make the fin est use of every opportunity for ad vancem ent in the business world. M e. as a nation, regret that development has come, because men always forget the responsibilities that come with leadership. 'The economical conditions are very bad and the time is soon com ing when com petition will be so keen that they can't increase income at all. “ The average college wofan has no interest in family life and if this con tinues, the college can not last." Dr. Russel strongly condem ns race suicide. “ H igher education is to fit young men and women to take their ordined po sitions in the world and the highest ideal is good living and civilization.” The ( )regon M onthly for March is just out. President Campbell addressed ,the Y. M. C. A. at its m eeting last F ri day on “ S »fibers, G uerillas and Camp- follow ers.” Pursuing the figure of war, the president said: “ In the great social conflict which seem s inevitable, each man must be either a soldier, or a guerilla, or else a cam p-follow er. No one can doubt that a conflict im pends, that there are w rongs which m ust be righted before ultim ate peace can be restored. The hope of victory lies iu virile, practical C hristianity. H ow shall we enlist? If as soldiers we must learn first the pow er that there is in organization, second th at a man must be loyal enough to sacrifice self to the cause.
