What are your goals for SEIU Local 503, OPEU during your term of office? SEIU is leading the way for working families in Oregon. I'd like to improve on what we've started. I would work to help locals become more involved in governing our union. Contract and political campaigns are won at the local (worksite) level. If elected, my goal is to actively seek member input and opinions on the issues most important to our union and to implement the will of the majority. I also believe that childcare workers deserve full bargaining rights and I will actively work to help them achieve this. What is the biggest single issue the union will face during your term? The biggest challenge our union will face in the next two years will be at the bargaining table. Protecting fully-paid employer health insurance premiums for state workers and fighting off the erosion of health insurance for all our members. Members in home- care and long-term care are already experiencing the effects of employers shifting costs onto the backs of workers. How would you propose to resolve it? The health care battle can only be won through supporting legislators and lawmakers who understand the need for accessible, affordable health care for everyone. With the bulk of our wage and benefit reserve money going to constantly rising health care costs, we must engage in actions and campaigns to bring down those costs...for everyone. If we can get health care benefits off the bargaining table, we can finally realize the wage increases we deserve. My dad was a union member and as a welder built heavy coalmine equipment. I've always known what it means to be raised in a union family. I never thought I could join a union as a homecare worker. When a DHS member and an organizer knocked on my door, I was blown away to learn I could join a union and there were 200 other homecare workers right in my own zip code. Since that day, I've been determined to make sure that union members are aware of our rights on the jo b and in contract negotiations and how important it is to get active in politics.
