Editor and Public Relations M anager The state convention of the Oregon Education Assoc iation, the large and politically potent organization of school teachers and administrators, recently expressed overwhelming approval of a plan, first proposed by OSEA and described in the January issue of the NEWS, for im provement of the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System. The way is now clear for joint OSEA-OEA activity which gives good cause for optimism regarding the chances for retirement improvement in the next legislative session. During the last session of the legislature it became apparent that retirement improvements were not going to take place until there was some agreement between par ticipants in the system regarding what should be done. A fte r the session, OSEA and OEA staff members organized a meeting of representatives from public employee and employer groups which resulted in a Public Employees Re tirement Conference on last October 16. Enthusiastic con ference participants, who realized that the weaknesses in the present system were pretty much self-evident and that it should be possible to find a solution upon which the various groups could agree, gave to a steering committee under the join t chairmanship o f the executive secretaries of OSEA and OEA the responsibility of coming up with an improvement proposal. The information which he gave us was presented very well and cer tainly enjoyed by all who could at tend. I was sorry we did not have more attend, but the flu kept many away. Wahl has announced his candidacy for Alderman, Ward 7, in Salem. Wahl, 40, is a member of Ore gon Chapter 22 and has been in state service for the past 17 years. He is currently Training Officer and Assistand Personnel Director for the Department of Employment. Other positions held with the de partment include interviewer, job analyst, industrial consultant and supervisor of special services such as organization management, testing and test development. He is the owner of Wahl’s F ar go, Inc., a new business engaged in the manufacture and sales of transportation accessories.
