15 Retirement Board Secretary Resigns W. M. Schuppel, chairman of the public employes retirement board, has announced the resignation of Jerry S. Sayleras executive secretary to the retirement board, arid the ap pointment of Ried Stone as Mr. Say- lei^ ^ uccessor^, the effective I date 'of the change in execu^tiyje^eoretary to be as of October 10. - For the past several years Mr. Stone has held the position of Clackamas County auditor. Mr/Stone isya:- gradu ate in tpr^ineering from Dartmouth College and has had many years of experience - in insurance work, espec ially in the life insurance field. As auditor of Clackamas County, which has participated in the retirement sys-r.. tern since its inception, Mr. Stohe has hau|g|^|e contact with the retirement system and is quite familiar with Ksts, operation and princi^lqS1^ Comments by Mr. Sayler follow: ‘‘Our hearts' areKsaddened by the Untimely death ofOam esxM. Burgess who, during, the entire existence of. the retirement' system, was a most loyal and valuable member of'the* re tirement board. “Jim,” as -he was known to all of us, had lqng been in terested in a retirement plan, especi ally for I the teachers of Oregon. He w^s^an intimate ~|jgrxobal friend of the late Governor Earl Snell, both .men having been born on exactly the same date, July 11, 1895. ^^^wsjseems as good a place as any to relate a little story about J#im Bur- gess and EarP' S^^PH^yhich; was told to me many and which hast always seemed to me to be quite a rrema^J^^ le ^^liacid erSW “ In^July of<<1901 the. families of bo.th of these’six-year-old boys were travelS ingA^^pss the country in eastern Ore- gon with teamsI end'' wagons, .as was the custom in those days. They were.. ^B^h^a;inc^^nden.tlv of eahai other but by chance camped at the same camp-grounds along a stream in east ern Oregon on July 11, 1901, Jiihtyzbs plhyingtiarou^d ^the^camp established by his’ parents .when a strange little .bqw./ffom^^neighboriiîg/càmp came over and invited Jim to share his bag of je’lly\h|âns,v stating that it was! his O^^Mbiithday and the jelly beans were . in the nature of a birthday re- membrance. Jim stated to the other little bo ythat it. ,was also his sixth* birthday. The other little boy was E arl Snell. .Out of this early contact- developed a life-long friendship be tween 'the tw IB ^ vrart men, both/oS whom Jeft an indelible mark, each in his own way, upon thehiistb'fyfrof our HjRe. ' Both', were tremendously inter-/ esteOWeducation. and both were en- thusiastically interacted; in >the estab lishment of our. retirement system. Both are now gone,"but certainly their memoriesWill remain with us always. “In passing, may I say that succeed- ing goverfiors havë 'likewise been tre- mendously interested in the successful operation of the retirement system. Our present Governor McKay not only takes a keen interest in the system but la m genuinely surprised at the know ledge he has concerning it and his grasp of the' ’.o^CTall fundamental prin- cipales involved. I “As to my> own .change in plans, per-, haps little need be said. For some time I È^ ^ p elt that I should return to pri- vate business in an effort to expand my income, if^ ^ ^ ible. In my opinion, many public officials in Oregon are urf f l p « « . Money, however,¡&g not all- imppr^Bagnd were this thé/only 'con- reS^^jsnWl wquld'J> not be making a change; F.or the past more than five years I have devoted my best efforts in the interest of public employes, par-, ticularly the older ones. Now I would lilgg| to try^q^do^omething for the young ^^O^ation- coming up and ex- pect to deyote the I remaining .years of my life to this activity^ It seems to me our young people need to be taught, mS B I I I the/ fundamental principles of Amenëanism^^^ ^ j ^ ^Baïid' the ho^^^ 'o ld ' virtuësj^f honesty, indus-,, try, anddimegfity. In ¿fact,‘1/believe dll of us should place mbie^ emphasis on the spiritual I approach to all of our present-day problems - which seem so grievous. In my opinion, there isno- «^ctqrbfiBSamportant ho siicb|sjMÉd| thé will^to do. “As for the retirement system itself,
