TO THE EDITOR: We, the members of the s ta ff at S ile tz T rib a l Smokehouse, would like to express our appreciation to Smokehouse Manager, Dan Lundy. Dan is not only our boss but also our friend. He has devoted • him self to the Smokehouse from the beginning. We feel that if it wasn't for Dan, the Smokehouse would not be where it is today. Dan is more than the manager of the Smokehouse, he is the driving force behind it. He is always trying new ideas to make the Smokehouse bigger and better. His enthusiasm is very catching. He makes the Smokehouse a great place to work. He never has a problem with jumping right in and helping us out no matter what needs to be done. Dan is not only there for us professionally but personally, if we need him. I really believe my job wouldn't be as challenging if not for Dan. We feel so comfortable working for Dan that everything runs smooth. Dan is the best manager Siletz Tribal Smokehouse could have. We don't know what would happen without him. Keep up the good work, Dan, and thank you for giving us such a great place to work!!! ThaQk You, Ron Hudson EDITORS NOTE: The Election Board informs us that a person cannot remove their name from the ballot. . However, they can decline the position if elected. Happy Birthday Cliffton! Auntie loves you! TO THE TRIBAL MEMBERSHIP: Election time is almost here. I am quite surprised at some candidates. We, as tribal members have the right to exercise our vote who we want to represent us on Tribal Council. We listen to the same thing every year..... empty promises. There is a candidate that is running that doesn't give a hoot for Elders, and one that doesn't care for poor tribal members. I don't want someone like that to represent me. Every vote counts. The same goes fo r C o u n c il representatives. The freedom of religion is one example. Just because a tribal member has not been raised as an Indian, they should still have an open mind on Indian issues. We, as American Indians, do have a right to our freedom of religion where ever we might be. Most of everybody is concerned about the blood degree. It's too bad that is al| they are concerned about. What is more important is the economical part of the Tribe. If anything should be voted on, it is STEDCO. The money that STEDCO has lost, every Tribal member could of benefited from a per capita. Joella Cain Our sympathies are extended to the family of ^Wait Howell. A THANK YOU NOTE; I, Pete Downey, of the Shasta Nation am the Grandson of John Adams, Shasta/Rogue River, his uncle being the great war chief, Tyee John. Chief John gathered the tribes of the Rogue River to recover their lands on September 20, 1850. 143 years later his great-great- great-nepheW, Robert Kentta is at work researching what happened in that time to his people. We must remember that most Indian law today is tied to these treaties. I myself believe if my uncle Tyee John did not stand his ground on the Rogue, we would not be living on the Siletz. The bloodline would have died on the Rogue. I can thank my mother, Mae Adams, for her wonderful resilience. Thank you, Robert, this was much overdue research. Pete TO THE EDITOR: On November 6th, I attended my first Tribal Council meeting. I was very pleased to learn that K as a Tribal Member, have power within the Tribe by attending Tribal Council meetings, listening to issues of concern and voting on subjects that directly concern me as a Tribal Member. When I lived away from the Siletz area, I use to complain a lot because I did not agree with our Tribal Council's choices. As distressed as I was, I did not make any attempt* to vote or to even send in an absentee ballot. I still thought I had a right to be irritated with the Tribe and it's politics. I have since discovered that if I as a Tribal Member do not vote, then I am allowing a handful of people to détermine the future of my Tribe. Whether I agree with these decisions or not is irrelevant. I have given up my voice of opinion by being silent and not voting. The point is, if you want to stop feeling powerless over the decisions that are being made about our future as a Tribe, then send in your ballot or stop by your area office and vote. It only takes five minutes, yet the results will affect you for many years to come. SILETZ TRIBAL MEMBER RENEE METCALF P.S. Simmons, and also to those who arranged and assisted this cessation. We wish to apologize for the blatant disregard of mention for the unnamed directs, we do not know why this was so; but it is done. Just know that so long as our hearts beat in our chests, so long does our father live. Thank You, Jason & Levi.
