"If an individual empties his purse into his hand, no one can take if from him." Ben Franklin. They should have also added to some of the Siletz Tribal members, "they would still be a few cents short." Robert Marzan This is for the people who have nothing to do but complain and don't get off of their rear ends and do something for a change. Robert Marzan , Dear Editor: ■ At th e 1 1 /3 /9 0 -G e n e ra l Council meeting, "Tribal Member Concerns" was the first agenda item. One family was upset with G e n e ra l M a nager, P hil Rilatos' hiring of a Tribal M em ber in a F orestry position and for the hiring of a non-Indian, (it w asn't c le a r w hat p o s itio n ) . Another fam ily was upset with whoever, (unnamed), conducted .interviews for the Springfield JTPA position. While > not one likes 9 to be rejected for a position and it may be human nature to re act ,’i th e tici s m t h at ensued was hum ilia tin g , embarrassing and uncalled- for. I truly felt empathy for the targeted fam ilies and individuals. Tribal Council was also called out for delegating hiring a uthority to PhiL (one of the duties he was hired for!). Someone stated Phil shouldn't be the General M anager a s he 'd h ire d seventeen, o f his ia m ily members: I believe that was a slanderous statem ent, serving only to fuel the December 1990 - PAGE 3 controversy on the General Council floor. Will future job announcements require e x te n s iv e fa m ily tre e s accompanying applications? N e a rly e ve ryo n e could possibly be related. People, take a good look at what we're doing to our future--we’re killing ourselves offl A no th e r s ta te m e n t suggests we shouldn't hire a Tribal Member for General Manager. I have seen three General Managers come and g o -o n e , a Tribal Member who transferred to another job, and two (one Indian; one n o n -In d ia n ), w ere fire d . Considering the years Phil has served an ever-changing Tribal Council, I'd say on balance he's done an adequate job. On more than one occasion, Phil's taken verbal beatings at General Council meetings. Yet, he maintains a courteous manner and has stayed w ith the T rib e ,, w orking to expand and im prove T ribal Services. How many others could stand up to such verbal abuse time and again and maintain that commitment. Not one of us is perfect; it's n o t.fa ir to say ydu're a better person than Phil until you've walked in his shoes. The next tim e someone stands up in a m eeting to b e little or criticize a Tribal leader or employee, put yourself in that person's place. How would you like to be treated? Kristi BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT Mr. and Mrs. David H. Carey of Toledo are proud to announce the birth of their daughter Nellie Violet Carey. Nellie was born November 13, 1990 at 2:35 AM at Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis. Nellie is the grand-daughter of Alice Johnson and great grand-daughter of Violet Johnson of Siletz. Nellie is also the grand daughter of John and Joan Turner of Bellingham, Washington. She joins two sisters, Fawn and Trish and two brothers, Mike and Dennis of Toledo. Nellie weighed 7 lbs. and 9 oz.
